Good place to retire. Low crime and cheap. - 9/28/2019
I retired and moved here in 2008 because it was a cheap place to live and my house cost only $70,000 in '08. I found through time that the city is low in crime, has a lot of good restaurants and shopping. Downtown is 95% restored and a great place to walk my dog. Nay Aug park is a city park and a nice green oasis that host occasional events. Another thing that I like about the city is the low traffic volume.
We are about two and a half hours from Manhattan and around the same to Philadelphia. The local airport is fifteen minutes from my house and never congested. I'd also like to state that my house taxes are only $1450 a year and no income taxes for government

Wonderful climate - 12/19/2013
The climate of Wilkes barre- Scranton area in the summer is very humid and hot with temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s most days. The fall is cooler with high temperatures in the 60s, 70s and the first frost isn't normally until early November . The winters are very similar to NYC and Philadelphia because of Atlantic winds and low elevation from the Wyoming Valley. Highs are normally in the 40s and lows in the mid 20s. On average there is about 25-30 inches of snow nothing compared to the cold harsh climate of western Pennsylvania city's like Erie and Pittsburgh.

No Jobs, Corrupt, Terrible Climate - 5/19/2013
Scranton, PA is definitely not an up and coming city. It is a dying city with no future and no hope. Here are several reasons not to move to this city: 1. Economy. Most jobs are minimum wage and unemployment is the highest in the state. There are no new jobs moving to the city; only section 8, welfare recipients from NYC/NJ. 2. Nepotism. This ties into the economy as well. To even earn a decent living, you must "know" someone here. 3. Politics. This also ties into nepotism. Corruption is RAMPANT and the city is literally broke. It is Chicago-style politics on steroids. 4. Climate. 6 months out of the year are subject to heavy snow and it rains A LOT year-round. The sky is more often cloudy/gray than sunny/blue. 5. The Locals. This area must have the most close-minded, ignorant, unhealthy, and uneducated populace of any city in America. Most people born here, die here. It is literally White Trash, USA. 6. Transportation/Roads. There is a severe lack of public transit, so having a car

Gray - 6/27/2011
If you enjoy sunshine, Scranton is not the place for you. The region suffers close to 200 days of gray, overcast skies per year and barely 50 days clear of clouds. It's very dreary, including the summer. Don't forget to pack an umbrella. It rains all through spring and summer.
