Sarah has it all wrong - State College is the plac - 5/12/2006
Sarah - what neighborhood do you live in? Yes - if you live within the heart of student housing you are asking for variable risks that relate directly to student lifestyles. They are, in fact, what drives the Penn State community and economy. If you would look around at other locations that have been established in State College but not within walking distance to campus (IE Park Forest) or some of the newer developments within Ferguson and Patton Townships (still State College) you will find a very peaceful, clean living environment with all the advantages of the town. Parking is not a problem, either.

And Red Lobster??? Where the heck are you getting your data. There are plenty of high quality restaurants in the region, along with grocery stores, and the means to learn how to prepare your own unique dishes.

Good luck finding a better place to live. The heart of Pennsylvania is truly one of the greatest places to be, and it will only get better. Yes, Read More

Safe, affordable, friendly and vibrant! - 5/11/2006
Every community will have its share of bitter and ignorant louts like several of the preceding posters. Ignorance = living side-by side with college KIDS next to campus and expecting them to act like grown adults. Get real! We live less than five miles from the campus gates and I have never seen a college kid throw up in public, steal my patio furniture, or any of these activities that are probably limited to an obvious 4-6 block diameter. If these things bother you, move a few blocks as has been suggested. The winters are not harsh, they are quite mild by Northern standards. The sports teams, PSU and State High alike, consistently achieve at very high levels, there is a lot of cultural activity in town, the Festival of the Arts is a top national arts gathering every year. Summers are near 80 with relatively low humidity. There are countless nature trails and parks within walking or easy driving distance. Pittsburgh, NYC, Philly, Baltimore and DC are all within 4 hours Read More

State College IS A COLLEGE TOWN for a big ten school. Penn State is a great school that provided great admentities to the town. Every college has its drunk students. Dont sound so ignorant. However, the student to town resident ratio is really high on the students side, so you have to put up with college students Read More

Really A Great Place - 5/8/2006
State College is really not as bad as the previous poster made it out to be. Yes, there are parties but they are generally contained in the downtown area and do not overshadow everything else. If one wishes to avoid the noise and occasional garbage the solution is simply to live a few blocks from campus instead of across the street in the heart of downtown. Even the downtown area is clean and pleasant so long as you aren't walking around in the middle of the night. There is a nice variety of shops and cafes within walking distance of campus. The Nittany Mall is the biggest in the area and only about 5-6 miles from downtown State College.
The Penn State campus is beautiful and provides activities and cultural attractions(www.psu.edu). There are several museums, parks, the largest academic library on the east coast and of course sporting events. There are always lectures and plays on campus and in the downtown theatre. The area has public transportation (www.catabus.com), bike Read More

I agree with Sarah - 5/5/2006
State College is a mess. The borough will ticket you for parking in front of the house you own (even if you do not have a private driveway), we rival Seattle in number of gray days per year, the winters are unbelievably harsh, and there is virtually no diversity.
As for restaurants, Red Lobster was voted the the #1 place to dine in State College last year...need I say more?
The students will steal your patio furniture, wake you up at 3:00 AM, even enter your house if possible, proceed to get sick, refuse to leave because they think it's their house, and then pass out drunk on the floor. (This has actually happened more than once to different families here.)
And don't bother calling the police for noise violations...the never write them up. If they did, they would activate a point system that is supposed to be enforced to control problem-rental properties in residential areas.
It may be that you have so many papers to publish, etc. that you won't have Read More

You don't have to join a frat to live in one. - 5/2/2006
State College is a great place to be if you are 18-21, have never worked a day in your life and don't plan to, are an alcoholic, stay awake until 4am every night of the week and wake up at noon. Then, when you do wake up, you go drink instead of going to class. While you are walking to go drink, you walk through vomit from the night before that covers the town, and the occasional half eaten piece of pizza, ranch dressing, and broken beer bottles. Anyone who left a positive review of State College on here was drunk. I'll put money on it.
