Small town living - 12/16/2023
We are South Dakota natives and we moved to Hot Springs in 2023 after retiring. This move was predicated on a long-time knowledge of the city and many visits here going back to the mid-1990s. With that as a background, here’s why we chose to retire in Hot Springs. Number one, we like small towns. We have lived in cities with populations in the millions (Chicago and Hong Kong) and other cities both in the USA and internationally. We can happily say small-town life suits us. If you need to live in a city, Hot Springs is not for you. With that caveat aside, Hot Springs, SD has a lot going for it. Medical care is above average, with a well-run community hospital and a Veterans Administration Medical Center. Thus the town has a high proportion of retired military. Shopping is good for a small town with two grocery supermarkets, hardware and home improvement stores, banks and restaurants (lots of restaurants). A great place to retire! - 7/12/2014
Hot Springs, South Dakota has everything a retired person could want. I moved here (from Connecticut) ten years ago and I've never been happier. We have a beautiful micro-climate, probably because of the shape of the mountains around us and the warm water under the ground. Not every day, but very often even in the middle of January, we will see daytime temps in the 50's and 60's. (It'll go down to 20 at night though.)
We have two beautiful senior apartment buildings, a State Veteran's Home, an assisted living, and a brand new nursing home. We have a new hospital and several doctor's offices. We have chiropractors, two dentists, and a great eye doctor.
We have several spas and fitness centers.
Hot springs has two grocery stores, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a music store, and lots of unique shops downtown carrying everything from women's clothing to quilting supplies, spinning and weaving supplies, furniture, gift items, antiques, art

A visitor's impression of Hot Springs - 10/16/2010
This is a small town, suitable for those who like the Black Hills and want someplace quieter than Rapid City (and a little warmer -- it's located in a kind of climatic anomaly, because the Hills to the north block and divert the colder air from the north, and the geothermal heat from the springs also helps to elevate average temps year round). Pretty, some interesting shops downtown, and affordable housing and rentals. Some of the negatives you may have read in the Rapid City page might apply here, so if you insist on being surrounded by liberals and intellectuals, this might not work for you. However, I have to say that generally westerners, of the type you find in all of western SD, are a tolerant and free-thinking people who tend to look past ideological differences. It's a bit paradoxical, because at the same time, they often follow the lead of some very rigid and right-wing leaders and media figures in our country.
