How it really is. - 4/9/2022
There are many things to do if you’re the outdoors type .Closest beach is about 5hrs away. There’s medium range of shopping. It does not have high end retail. Most events you might want to attend, you do not hear about until they have passed. Locals leave the area during race weekend. We like our lakes a lot! We are a friendly group of people, but the locals really don’t want you here; they’ll be friendly because they’re expecting you to leave soon. For the ones planning on moving here! Don’t bring what you left here.(don’t California my Tennessee) Don’t try to change this place. Learn to fit in. Learn the value of a dollar here. You can show off but be modest! College students do there on thing and we’re use to it. It’s a party town but low key. Everyone is in a hurry going no where! Rent is not as cheap as this website says add a couple hundred to each level of bedroom. City runs off good ole boy system. Government officials get in and do what they need for themselves and get out. Read More

Great collection of small cities for a metro feel! - 10/13/2021
I've been fortunate to live all over the world, but privileged to have been born in East Tennessee. I live here now, and it has the perfect mix of small town friendliness and metropolitan convenience. Great parks, hiking and biking trails, low crime, low cost of living, excellent health care, local restaurants, and robust infrastructure. Any map search will offer multiple options, all within minutes of the same time of Read More

Mountains for hiking and lakes for fishing... - 11/29/2020
I’ve lived near here all my life, moved here in 2015. I love this area!! Great people with great attitudes!! Excellent shopping with lots of restaurants, but low traffic. Several colleges and hospitals. Good city and county government. No state taxes. A great places to raise a Read More

Wretched Healthcare - 3/5/2020
If you move here, you put the health and safety at risk. The healthcare system is abysmal. Compared to hospitals I have used in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and South Africa, it is by far the worst. Wait times at the ER at Johnson City Medical Center are often more than eight hours. Wait times to see specialists are usually measured in months. You will not see an MD regardless of your medical condition, you will see an RN, or perhaps a PA. The life of you and your family will be at risk. I fear their reaction to the Covid 19 virus. This place is simply not worth the Read More

I LOVE THIS AREA! - 2/7/2018
This place is beautiful beyond compare and SO MUCH TO DO! I have lived in 7 states and more cities and small towns. Never... have I found a place so rewarding. If you are thinking you can come and be a criminal, it won't happen. The police are tough here. Yet another good point for Read More

MY THOUGHTS ON JOHNSON CITY - 3/28/2015
WE MOVED HERE 2 YRS AGO AND HERE ARE MY PROS AND CONS:
PROS: CHEAP APARTMENT RENTALS, BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. FRIENDLY PEOPLE WHO MIND THEIR OWN
BUSINESS, SURROUNDED BY CUTE LITTLE TOWNS WITH LOTS OF ANTIQUE SHOPS, GREAT MEDICAL
CARE,GOOD BENEFITS FOR SENIORS.
CONS: WEATHER IS WAY TOO HOT AND HUMID. IT'S HUMID ALMOST ALL YEAR LONG. EVEN IN WINTER. FALL IS WAY TOO SHORT AND SPRING ALSO. IT'S LIKE 2 SEASONS, SUMMER AND WINTER.GROCERIES AND CLOTHING PRICES ARE VERY HIGH, EVERYONE DRIVES LIKE A MANIAC..
ESPECIALLY THE MEN; THEY ARE VERY RUDE DRIVERS.ROADS ARE HORRIBLE, CABLE AND ELECTRIC
IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THE ONLY REAL SAVING GRACE IS THE MOUNTAINS. THEY ARE Read More

I do not recommend this city - 2/10/2015
Johnson City is an impoverished city with a weird mix of rednecks, screwed-up vets, and college students. Read More

The Climate is Wonderful! - 1/1/2015
Having moved here a little more than a year ago, my favorite thing is the amount of sunny days and the mild winters. Lived all my life in Ohio and dealt with gray skies and blizzards. There are several more months of living outdoors Read More

Just okay- - 1/2/2014
okay after living here 10 years:

The good- people are mostly decent, but it depends on your neighborhood. If you are a married couple, it will take some time to find neighbors who are friendly. SOME neighborhoods are worse, as the religion issue comes into play.

The bad- Culturally, unless you are into shopping at the mall every weekend, the area is limited. You do have Asheville NC an hour south and beautiful mountains. The wildlife also is nice. Lakes are nice but some are polluted. Stay out of Kingsport (Eastman chemical).

Johnson City is better than Bristol, and from what I read on here Knoxville and pollution is bad. So, JC is better than those places. But unless you have a big network of friends, expect to be challenged, and possibly bored. For college students its probably okay. But if you have family and are trying to settle here, its not too diverse.

The economy centers around the University, Med center and retail big box Read More

Living in Johnson City - 2/17/2012
I have lived in Johnson City for 20 years. I was born in St. Louis, but grew up here, and wouldn't change that if I could. I love it here. It has lots of restaurants and other entertainment. It has many of the fun big city things without all the traffic and other negative things about a big city. Even if you work all the way across town, you can get there in about 15 mins. And about 20 mins. away, you have all the fun of the Appalachian Mtns. We have great weather here all year, the people are friendly, and the cost of living is very Read More
