Delta Blues - 10/3/2005
Sad place -- city and county politics run amuck, city and county schools very poor unless attending private, serious crime is very high, job availability is slim and pay is well below standard. Good side -- weather is nice and property is cheap. You can live large in Memphis, but be prepared to pay in tax 9.75%. Police understaffed, public services dwendling. Must buy earthquake insurance, Memphis is on New Madrid Read More

Went Back to Austin QUICKLY - 8/31/2005
Well, I followed a friend to Memphis and decided to payoff 6 months rent just to get out! Seriously, this was probably the most depressing place I have EVER been. Watching the 10pm news would give you grey hair, and locals would try and bum money off me, and my friends. You could see "depression" in the face of every citizen, and EVERYONE was ALWAYS talking about religion CONSTANTLY and you could watch people walk out the grocery store with stolen goods...HAHA BIG contrast from Austin. Anyway I could write a book on how BAD Memphis is, but take my word for it...DON'T EVEN VISIT its just not worth it..... AMERICA has some serious reflecting to do in general....On another note check out Minneapolis, MN and anytown, WI I did enjoy my time in those two Read More

Mephis Fun If You're Single - 8/17/2005
I've lived in Memphis for 5 years now, and am looking to move for my career, but have definitely had a BLAST here! I am single and have found plenty to do, but I would never want to raise a family here. High crime, poor public school systems, inconsistant city and county government with constant infighting and scandal, poor customer service, and bad drivers!

The people ARE very nice though, if you're "in your own element". Downtown is newly renovated and lots of fun to be in. Compared to the rest of the country, it's a pretty cheap place to live. The suburbs are for families, so if you're single or an active couple, live inside the loop. Higher crime and prices, but well worth it for the Read More

Memphis is the armpit of America. Patricia is right—there is nothing here to offer our children. There are no recreational activities whatsoever. The heat is unbearable, unless it's winter, in which case it rains contiunally. The government is a farce, as is the educational system. The only saving grace to Memphis is the low cost of living, but as the old addage goes: You get what you pay for.

And let's not forget racial tension. Let me repeat this point for greater emphasis—LET'S NOT FORGET RACIAL TENSION!!!!! If you are a blonde whilte woman in the city, don't expect southern hospitality. In fact, don't even expect to be waited on or checked out in a market. Seriously.

This isn't even a place worth visiting. I've spent 15 greuling years here. It may be too late for me, but please, save yourselves and STEER CLEAR OF Read More

Living in Memphis - 8/6/2005
I have lived in Memphis my whole life and boy has it changed. So much for southern hospitality. The city school system is a mess, there aren't too many good jobs around, and a lot of people are just rude. The crime is awful and there are too many people living off welfare. The city is lazy and everyone has a chip on their shoulder. I am definately moving as soon as possible because I am not raising my child in this kind of environment. I will say that it is an okay place if you have no plans of settling, but anyone with a family steer clear. Go to Nashville or Read More

Memphis-I want to move too. - 7/21/2005
I have lived in Memphis, TN for 3 yrs now. I love my job, do not enjoy living in Memphis. I've lived all over the US and Memphis would have to be listed at the bottom as my least favorite. Positives: the sunsets, a little hot-but for the most part weather is nice, my career, lots to do. Negatives: Economy, crime, school system, customer service, city Read More

Yes, people are nice here. I've lived here for almost 10 years. Between the climate, the crime, the poverty and the lack of good jobs with decent incomes...I am searching for another place to live. Its too hot Read More
