Property Taxes - 1/9/2007
Metro Austin, as the rest of Texas, places enormous Property Taxes on its residents. There is no State Income Tax, but that is a small consolation when you consider that a newly built home in the burbs of Austin, with a purchase price of around $180,000 comes with a hefty $5,000+ a year Property Tax bill. That is about $430 per month! And when you consider that a person on a fixed income (retired) has thier pension remain the same year after year, our house values are going up simply because of "demand" which would be great to cash in but the downside is once you sell to get your money out of the house, you dont have a place to live...at least you wont be paying the property Read More

I can't believe Austin gets such high reviews??? - 1/5/2007
Moved to Austin 3 months ago and will be moving to another state soon.

Austin has: endless traffic (tons of tolled highways being built-ugh), lots of people looking for work, poor service )particularly food, and a real materialistic "keeping up with the Jones's" mentality. Sure there's a "keep Austin Weird" slogan, and it does have some real hippies, but I love people complementing each other on their high end cars. Also, I'm considered somewhat of a yuppie so go figure?

I've lived all throughout the country, including LA and Malibu, CA., mind you and this place is strangley focused on appearences. The University of Texas seems to be a fine school and 7th street is pretty cool but I've yet to see anyone smiling or laughing...like EVER! People will run over you in there SUV and make you get out of there way when they walk...all and all it's odd and I wish someone hade called a spade like a spade on this site! It would save many of us the trouble of Read More

Information on the allergy situation, and other to - 12/27/2006
Hello, my wife and I are in our late 20's with no kids and looking to relocate from Cincinnati to somewhere with a demographic that we fit better in. Austin keeps coming up in our discussions, but we have some questions.

1) what is the allergy situation? I've seen a few posts warning of impending asthma onsets and a need to stay indoors all fall and spring. We both suffer from allergies and have to take prescription meds here in Cincinnati. Are we asking for trouble to move to Austin?

2) Outdoor recreation opportunities? One of the #1 reasons we're looking to leave Cincinnati is the lack of available outdoor activities that appeal to a couple who is young, athletic, and thrill seeking. We'd like to be able to backpack, rock-climb, mountain bike, camp, etc. on the weekends without having to look 8-10 hours away for viable options. I hear that there's an abundance of outdoor opportunities in Austin, but then look at a map and see no major geographical Read More

Welcome change - 12/16/2006
I've been living in NV at Lake Tahoe for 12 years. Moving to Austin was a good thing. It's a real city with a university, nightlife, recreation, good weather, and room to grow.

This website clearly shows that Austin is Democratic, not Republican. It's also clear from your remarks that you are ignorant and want Austin to stay that way. Sorry to disappoint Read More

I’m considering relocating to Austin any suggestio - 12/9/2006
I’m from Orange County, California and the cost of living and traffic is bad. I’m 15 miles from work and it takes me 30-45 minutes to get home and my rent is pricy. How good or bad is the traffic, job opportunity, and cost of living here in Austin? Can someone from Austin please advice?

Thank you,

Great Place to Live - 12/1/2006
The general vibe and overall quality of life is great. Plenty of cultural and community things to do, but plenty of outdoor and recreational things too. Bike trails, good parks, soccer fields, the lakes of course, and downtown nightlife and restaurants are continuing to get better. Some people complain about traffic and commercialization, but that's just because the growth was fairly sudden and pushed property taxes and cost of living up dramatically in the late 80's/early 90's.

We are getting ready to leave but not for shortcomings of the Read More

Should I come back home to Austin? - 12/1/2006
I read a few comments on here and a lot of them are right on the money. Now I'm trying to decide if I move back home to Austin or stay in RTP, NC? I'm in IT and from Dallas, TX originally but went to UT and worked in Austin for many years until I was laid off in the '01-'02 IT depression. Loving Austin as I do, I stay there for 1.5 years starving to death and going broke waiting for another IT job that never happened.

Now I have this great job that I love in RTP (Research Triangle Park)but I hate the NC income taxes and the cost of living here is awful. This place is NOTHING like Austin or Texas for that matter! I am not really happy here outside of work and there is lots of traffic here too!

I have an opportunity in Austin with a major company but with a pay cut. So how bad has the traffic gotten since '03? Is Austin still the same party town it used to be? Is live music still in every corner bar? What about 4-6th Street?

I'd really like some Read More

fewer jobs in austin, tx - 11/29/2006
There aren't many jobs available in Austin, TX. It's quite hard to find a job that you are really looking for, especially in a professional field. The pay isn't hot either. Be prepared to be disappointed and frustrated before you moving Read More

Thinking of buying vacation home - 11/15/2006
Does Austin have "snowbirds"? My husband and I will be visiting soon to look around and check out potential winter homes. We currently have a winter home in NW Florida/Gulf of Mexico and are fed up with rising cost of insurance, hurricane fears, etc, not to mention a lack of anything interesting to do if you don't golf or want to lay by the pool all day. We visited Spring 2005 and fell in love with the lush greenery, lakes, intelligent and friendly folks. We live in Minneapolis and like a mix of urbane life and beautiful scenery, lakes, nature and think we could find that in Austin with a warmer winter climate. We want a view of water and outdoor living (we're very interesting in the Lake Travis area, The Hollows, etc) with the option to go downtown for theatre, fine dining, shopping, etc.
I'm loving this site and learning a Read More
