reply to Austin "not being a nice..." - 6/10/2006
Quick comment and observation in regards to Austin not being a nice place to live for African-Americans. It seems to me that you've got the wrong city...I think what you described sounds more like San Antonio, the city I reside in. Austin seems to be generally accepting of cultural and ethnic diversity. Of course I'm only seeing it as a frequent visitor, so I really couldn't make an adequate judgment.
But then Texas has always been considered and holds the reputation of being one of the most racist states in the country. And I can only attest to the fact that in SA, a black man is considered a second or third class citizen...except of course, if he plays for the Spurs. The race issue I'm afraid goes deeper then the outward manifestation of blacks being a majority in crime ridden cities such as Detroit, Camden, Washington, DC, etc. It stems from a social, economic, educational program with deep-rooted political agenda's.

Some truths about Austin from someone who's lived - 5/31/2006
Positives:
1. Lots to do outdoors
2. Very safe here (in general)
3. Housing is some of the cheapest in the country
Negatives:
1. Allergies are terrible here. Rates #2 worst place in the US. Never had any problems before I moved here, now every year around Cedar Fever season (look that up), me and about 50% of the population stay inside for several months. Starts in December and runs through March or so, fun stuff. Oh, remember all those great outdoors stuff I talked about above? Well, you have a 50/50 chance of forgetting about them in the late fall and early spring.
2. Traffic here has gotten to be *very* bad and the 'solution' the state came up with is to build (drum roll please) - toll roads! Welcome to New Jersey - yuck! If you've spent much time on toll roads you can appreciate how bad they can be and, joy of joys, you get to pay for them each and everytime you use them.
3. It is HOT here. Right

Yosh, I'm a realist, not an idealist. - 5/26/2006
You know Yosh, I have to laugh. It was one of your sisters, who stated that Austin sucks. Quoting that it's only made for White and Hispanics, but I guess since she's one of your sisters its ok to say that. It was a rebuttal to your racist sisters comments. Of course its never racism when a black person says it.... You can say what you want, but cities with a high population of blacks, bring a lot of crime. St. Louis, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Compton, Camden, Paterson, what do they all have in common??? High crime and blacks. Call me a racist, I call it a realist. I know blacks who say the same thing. They want the same as you and I, nice, clean neighborhoods, good place for families, etc. But guess what??? Your only going to get those in nicer white areas. Of course you can have a some minorities present but name one black neighborhood that looks like a place you would want to raise your son? Until you stop blaming the white man, will you realise that it's time

Is this a good place? - 5/26/2006
I have always heard that Austin is a pretty liberal, culturally diverse, highly educated place. Is this true? I am a college educated teacher, who is considering a move to Austin. Let me back up.....I am an African-American single mother who is considering a move to Austin with my young son. I thought of Austin because of all the great things I had heard in the past. Now I am not so sure, after reading some of the responses. The young lady who says its not a place for anybody but whites and hispanics. Is that true? The man who responded who hopes it is. Is he the average type of racist trash that lives in Austin? Its hard to imagine a place with such a large, highly regarded university would have people like that living there, but I would like to know. Even black people would like a safe place, with good schools and nice communities to raise our children. I am a teacher, of course education is important to me. Is someone can offer some real advice, please do. Is this a

Nice City, Bad Traffic - 5/22/2006
Austin has plenty of things to do. The univeristy offers many different sights as well as the capital complex, the downtown music scene, the outdoor activities, and the many many restaurants. If you learn the traffic back roads you can get around pretty easily, but if you're stuck on the major thoroughfares only, it can take over an hour to drive up to 5 miles on a bad

Want to relocate to Austin area. - 5/17/2006
I am from Phoenix, AZ. where it is really hot and one reason for leaving here. I here people say Texas is hot, but I guess it depends on where you come from. I know AZ. has a dry heat and easier to live with but maybe the heat in Austin is humid which makes it hotter. The summers in Phoenix last for almost 5 months. I'm sure not the case in Austin.
I am a senior woman, I drive and would like to know the best area for me to be in near Austin. I seen that city once and just loved it, it seems so different.

Not the place - 5/13/2006
Austin is NOT the place to live if you are not Caucasian or Hispanic. There is NOTHING here to do for anyone of another ethnicity. The natives treat anyone of another race like outsiders. Not welcoming at all!! DON'T MOVE HERE!! You'll be better off in HELL!! I can't wait to leave, anywhere has got to be better than
