Blue Skies - 4/23/2006
Of course the summers are hot in Austin, but the weather is lovely for the most part. Winter seems to last only two weeks and you rarely see any snow, certainly accumulations are rare. Although Austin has it's rainy weeks, you will enjoy mostly sun-drenched days. The heat is not a problem since air conditioning is Read More

Austin: A blue city surrounded by a red state - 4/20/2006
Austin is fairly libiral compaired to the other major cities in Texas, and anywhere in the south, for that matter. Thanks to the University of Texas and several other colleges, the population tends to be more diverse and higher educated. There is something for everyone in Austin: coffee houses on the lake, free wiFi all around the city, tons of live music venues, marathons everyother week, the lake, free movies in the park, one of the best independent book stores, Read More

We may have to relocate in the future and I would like to move back to Austin. I lived there for a couple of years in the 1980s. My husband is not excited about Texas, in addition to the fact that we would need to find him a decent job. (He is an application computer programmer that works with mainframe systems.)

What are his job prospects, and what can you share that might help him see what a great place Austin is to live? Read More

Redneck Hippies? - 4/7/2006
This city is a wacky hybrid. Imagine a Redneck and a Hippie.. now make them live together. It's like a crazy reality TV show, except I live it. Austin is delightfully strange. The famous austin bumper stick says it all "Keep Austin Weird". The summers are disturbingly hot and humid, probably worse than anyone would imagine. People in trucks have no idea how to drive. The left lane is the slow lane pretty much always. South Austin is the ghetto. If you love live music and going to tons of mediocre bars and clubs this city is your place to Read More

Questions about Commuting and Communities - 3/11/2006
We're considering relocating from Virginia, where my husband spends 4.5 hours each workday commuting to and from Washington, D.C. What is the commute like between Round Rock or Georgetown and Austin? Also, a website recommends census areas Austin #139 (in zip 78717), Georgetown #1 (in zip 78628), and Round Rock #2 and #1 (in zip 78681) as good communities for families with children. (We have four: 14-4). Any opinions/comments on these areas? Are we better off buying in a new community or preowned? Any recommendations would be much appreciated!
