Austin's quality of life is slipping - 9/14/2006

Running to stand still... - 9/13/2006
I moved from Austin to the Seattle/Tacoma area via Arizona 2 yrs ago. I absolutely love Austin and Texas, they are in my heart. You will definitely love running downtown...near Lake Austin. You can even make a stop at the famous bat cave where millions of bats sleep overnight under a bridge. Anyhow, I used to run downtown bc it was so beautiful and people actually remember pedestrians have the right of way. Texans are friendly and doubly so in Austin, Texas. Yes traffic is bad but where isn't it? The city, people, food and music make up for any humid-hot weather, of which there is plenty. Check out Dario's, a little Mexican taqueria that will make your mouth water. It's on the infamous "east" side but man can he cook! Bottom line, I would recommend anyone moving to Austin and I plan on being one of those people (move back) once I finish my PsyD here in Seattle. Peace out and I hope you move to AUSTIN! If it's good enough for Matthew McCouneghey and Lance Armstrong why not Read More

If you can take the heat - 9/12/2006
Austin is a wonderful place to live, but be warned, summer is long, hot and humid. Mold is also high here and living with allergies is a common problem. It starts getting hot in mid May and stays hot into October. Winters are relatively mild with lows in the 40s and highs in the upper 50s and 60s. There are the occasional winter warm spells that push daytime highs into the low 70s. I have been Christmas shopping bundled up in a coat one week and in short sleeves and flipflops the next. I am a transplant from the northeast and after 25 years I still haven't adjusted. But the city has so many things to offer that if you can take the heat, you'll love Read More

Too hot, dry and liberal - 9/12/2006
I have lived here for nearly 50 years, and will leave as soon as retirement allows. Each year it get's hotter and drier. The summers are brutal, we hit 100 deg. in APRIL! What good is summer if it's too hot to be outside? Everything dries up and dies. Sure it's a matter of opinion...but I prefer 4 seasons instead of a wimpy winter, short spring and imperceptable fall followed by 5 months of oven like weather. Add to that the liberal hippie attitude that has prevented roads from being built causing some of the worst traffic in the state coupled with constantly rising property taxes and a police department that is rather trigger happy makes me anxious to head Read More

What can anyone tell me about living in Austin. I already know there is a huge music scene and all, I want to know things only someone living there could tell me.

Austin transportation issues - 9/5/2006

Just got back from Cali - 8/9/2006
What a HUGE let down :( I went from SF down to San Diego... Aside all the evidence of gang violence and finally looking past the trash on the side of the road I really though everyone was friendly, but at this point in my life I can't imagine giving up Austin or the "ATX" for the Cali. Me being a gay male was left wondering "where are all the hot guys in California?" That question was answered when the plane landed in the ATX they all live in TX ;) .. Read More

Austin - has been a good place to raise a family a - 8/6/2006
My wife and I have been here since 1972, and the area has grown many times the size it was then. While the rapid growth has caused problems with increased traffic congestion, the city is really more interesting now than it was then. Lots of interesting shopping and recreation. Topography of the area to the west is beautiful with the Central Texas hill country. The main problem is the hot, humid summers with no rain. Good air conditioning in your home and cars is a must. Winters are very mild, though, sometimes barely going below freezing Read More
