Loving Austin - 11/8/2010
It's been one year since we relocated to Austin from Seattle and we are loving it. No one lied when they said it was really hot in the summer, but I love the sunshine and nice weather now that it's November. I'm still getting used to the critters, like snakes & scorpions, and my garden is a real experiment right now, but over all we love it.

The people are so friendly. There is so much to do here and it is a fabulous place to raise a family. We live up by the lake so we are in the metro area, not downtown, but it is an easy distance if you are used to a larger city.

Austin is up and coming- not quite a big city yet. But there is so much positive momentum here and the unemployment rate is low compared to the rest of the country. Yes, we have traffic but it is nothing like other major cities like Dallas or Houston. We have plenty of roads and they are building more. It's growing fast. Time will tell what Austin will be when it finally grows up. Right now, it's Read More

Having grown up in Austin I must agree. Austin Suc - 9/23/2010
Howdy y'all. I grew up in Austin and you're absolutely correct. It does suck. It was a neat "small town" city back in the 70's and early 80's but somewhere in the late 80's early 90's it was as if Austin started believing it's own press. You're correct that folks in Austin are arrogant, selfish and just down right narcissistic. Where else will you see a Ford Excretion SUV with an "Earth First" bumper sticker but having watched the change trough the decades I can tell you that a fair bit of the change stems from kids emulating the California crowd that flocked here in the 90's and 00's. They are under the misguided impression that they're much better educated than they are and have been raised the believe that they are "special", and they are. Just like everybody else. I finally had enough and left my childhood home the the new crop of Austinites. It will be sad to watch the city ultimately fail but I must admit I will find some pleasure in watching it happen. Good riddance to bad Read More

Austin is the ass of Texas - 7/21/2010
I have lived in Austin for three years now. 1st let me say the public eductional system here is horrible. If you have enough money to put your children in to a private school do it, however it has been my experience Austin's private sector is too prejudice. Nowhere have I ever witnesses the haves and the have nots like here in the capital of Texas. They talk of community, but the only community here is for the upper class and the homeless. They cut budgets like local swimming holes, but give elected officials 2.5% pay increases. COME ON! As a proud Texan I must admit Austin is a disgrace to all of texas. The traffic here is bad, but I can a lot for too many drivers in too small a space. It is the illegals who can't read, the police who don't police, the self serving ass who thinks they are better therefore cut people off in order for me to let yu go first, Every one thinks he is the line leader and they are ruder than most yankees. That makes me sick. I go to mass where Father Read More

No bashing or trashing intended here....Just don't understand what is so special about Austin. where's the appeal? I wanted a change, so I moved to Austin. Sticker shock! The apartment rental prices are outrageous. After a year, I gave up and moved back to Houston. A dollar has a much higher buying power Read More

Reviews on Austin and Surrounding Areas?? - 7/5/2010
We currently live in Northern New Jersey about 15 minutes outside of New York City. We both work in NYC and are looking to up and leave and move to somewhere different but similar.

We have heard mixed reviews on Austin. I would like to hear some feedback about the city and what towns in the surrounding areas (suburbs) would be best to live in.

We live outside the city but our area being located so close is infused with NYC life, attitudes and drawbacks. : very liberal, diverse, fast paced and traffic dense. We are looking for more land, less people, bigger bang for the buck with more peace and quiet and friendlier people and atmosphere.

I would like a review on this city in comparison to NYC if at all possible. The things we are reading are nothing different from our day to day life as far as the "negatives." Please let me know about all the pros and cons possible of Austin compared to NYC if possible.

Also, if anyone can recommend Read More

Austin is way overrated! It's nothing more than an - 7/2/2010
I'll be honest with everyone and say Austin isn't all it's hyped up to be. Yes, it's a friendly city, but it does absolutely nothing for me. I'll gladly state why I dislike Austin.

1.) IT'S HOTTER THAN HELL MOST OF THE TIME. The only real season here is summer. The spring and fall last all but a month, and the winter is maybe two weeks. Summer here begins about mid-April and goes all the way into November. Not to mention, it's super humid like a swamp, and the air is thick enough to swim through.

2.) AUSTIN ISN'T AS LIBERAL AS EVERYONE THINKS IT IS. Yes, it's progressive for a Texas city, but that's not saying much. Trust me; I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for three years, and there's no comparison between the two. Need I remind everyone Austin is the Capital of Texas, one of the most backward states in the Union? Most of those right-wing radical politicians live here and not Dallas nor Houston. Needless to say, Austin is one of the most racially Read More
