Not that bad, but not great... - 1/8/2011
I can understand some Austin-native frustration, but some people here take the pop growth way too personally. The hipsters can be a bit pretentious too touting their coolness...it's so lame I just have to laugh. In any case, I was drawn here because of the smaller city, recreation and beautiful hill country, good food, music, school spirit(hook'em horns), and southern hospitality. However, they have freakin' long hot summers, the drivers are a bit scary due to the diversity of people moving here(growing pains I assume), the infrastructure is poor because Austin fought the growth for so long and are now playing catch up, and there's a big homeless/pan-handler problem here - expect to be hit up half a dozen times down on 6th Street. In short, it's not bad, but it's not that special Read More

In Austin's Defense - 12/12/2010
This is an add on to a previous review I made.

I railed against Austin for its awful summer heat (Day AND night - at least here in the high desert of California it cools off at night. See my review for this area at Lancaster/Antelope Valley, CA.).

BUUUTTTTTT, in Austin's defense, it does have some nice winter weather. It can get cold. I remember it getting down to 2 degrees one day. But, generally speaking it has an avg January low of 40 and an avg January high of 60. So, there's the payback (for awful summer heat).

Couple of other points I didn't address:

Traffic: I saw it go from a place where you didn't have to worry about going cross-town at 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. - to a place where you did.

Haven't been back in a while (If they moved the airport from Airport Blvd way out to Bergstrom did they rename Airport Blvd?? I shared a house with 3 other guys on Airport Blvd and the {commercial airliners} would fly 100 feet over Read More

My Opinion on Austin - 12/4/2010
I lived in Austin from 1979 - 1995.

PROS:

-pretty hills/some nice views
-pretty lakes nearby (many with nice homes on them)
-pretty river running through town
-pretty wise/cool populace
-decent air quality (last time I checked)
-tons of beautiful women (guy's point of view)
-decent nightlife
-nice racial mix (not an overload of any one category)
-affordable food and utilities
-big university and state capitol add something to town

CONS:

-THE HEAT!!! The main, if not the only, reason I left. It is ungodly from June - August. And May and Sept. are bad too. You HAVE to have air conditioning in your car and home. I was tired of not being able to go outside without sweating miserably and being very uncomfortable (and then come the mosquitos!). It might be dryer than Houston, here, but it is still very muggy.

-housing costs: it looks like Austin ain't cheap no Read More

A few things I love about Austin - 11/28/2010
Hello. I am a mother of 2 young girls. I am originally from Michigan, and just moved to Austin, and I love it! :-) Austin is a great place to raise children and as far as I can tell the school systems are ahead of the curve. I know I haven't been there long enough to have a natives perspective, but I can already tell that Austin is a city I look forward to spending many quality years in. There is always something fun going on for all ages and theres a great music scene downtown. One great resource to get a feel for what's going in Austin is "austinchronicle.com" And not to mention the sun is always shining! And renting in a nice area is very reasonable for all the great places you can walk to right outside your front door. :-) Read More

Please tell me where all the jobs are... - 11/21/2010
I have lived in Austin for almost 3 years and have YET to find a decent job. I listened to the reports about how great the Texas job market was so I took the leap of faith and made my way to Austin. I have an MBA and working on a PhD and cannot find a decent job. At this current time I am working as a customer service rep. I am very grateful for having a job but... I am still seeking a slice of the apple pie that was talked about so highly!

Can anyone tell me where the jobs Read More

Austin ROCKS!! - 11/12/2010
Austin is a wonderful place to work, live, play, spend time outdoors with family and friends, start a business, raise children, etc. No place is perfect, but Austin ranks high on so many levels which is why people keep moving here and the city has grown like a weed for over 15+ years. Live music, great support of local businesses, especially restaurants, outdoor activities by the boat load (pun intended), hills, views, lakes, Hawaii-like weather much of the year, mild winters, low unemployment, good jobs, many tech companies here (our nickname is Silicon Hills btw), good hospitals and doctors, UT, the Capitol, proximity to Houston, San Antonio, Dallas/FW, the Texas coast, etc. No tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes. Austin is a great city that I predict will one day be Texas' most influential and possibly largest Read More
