Help me talk my husband out of it! - 6/29/2007
I am late 30s stay at home mom w/ 2 small boys. My husband (34) is attracted to the 'hipness' of Austin and the job market and wants to move there. I am dubious. I just spent 4 yrs in Florida heat and want the next move to be right. Tell me all the bad things about Austin (be honest, now) and why a late 30s housewife, for lack of a better term, would be totally out of place and miserable. Thanks.

PS: If you see a lot of late 30s women running around Austin laughing hysterically at their good fortune, let me know that Read More

No Thank-You Can't Wait to leave horrible Allergie - 6/24/2007
I have lived here a year now and for me it has been horrible. We are from California and were living in Charleston, SC temporarily before coming to Austin. We moved here for my husband because of his degree in Computer Science and the industry for it out here. For me personally it does not offer what I was looking for! It has bad traffic just like California and is not cheap either our rent for a tiny 1bedroom is going up after just a year. Alot of people like it out here for various reasons, but being I was looking to get away from the whole overcrowded and high prices of Cali it is the same in Austin. Now the allergies have been horrible for me my skin has been under attack and I have had to start under going allergy shots and medicine. I am not talking minor allergies it was so bad that I was sick for 3 months because of my skin having hives, come to find out Austin is the worst place for allergies. We are not staying here and moving back further to the real South and Read More

Depends on what you're looking for.. - 6/10/2007
I think the problem with these surveys that rank best cities to live is they
try to be all things to all people. They do have seperate rankings for retirement areas and family-orientated cities and such, but most surveys are one-size-fits-all. Most surveys Austin ends up on are those same generic ones. I've been out in Austin for awhile, and there are very good and bad things about it. First, just because an area is growing fast doesn't mean its a great place to live. Greater Phoenix is a hellhole, and is also the fastest growing area outside of Vegas, another awful place to live as well.
Austin is growing fast, like the others, but its a great place considering
the pace of growth. All fast growing cities will have awful traffic. It simply goes with the territory, as it takes time for the infrastructure to catch up, if it ever does. All fast-growing cities will also have many transient neighborhoods, with many huge apartment complexes on the outskirts,

Property Taxes - 5/31/2007
People here fight state income tax because they think it's better to pay high property tax. Well, I use to believe that as well until I lived in a state with state income tax. In Colorado, I paid less in state income tax and property tax than I do here in Austin for just property tax. And, my house is half the size of what I had in Colorado. I would love to stay in my house and retire here after the kids move out, BUT, I won't be able to afford the taxes. So, I know that I will have to sell and find a small place to retire to in a town where I will know no one. I've already decided to move to a state with state income tax because I won't be having to pay as much tax when I'm retired as I will in Texas with property Read More

Austin, TX - 5/31/2007
Austin is ok. It's greener and hillier than other parts of Texas. There is no state income tax BUT the property tax is SO high. I'd rather have state income tax because if I were to lose my job, I'd have to sell my house because of the property tax. When I lived in Colorado, the property tax was low enough that if I were to lose my job, I could still survive.

There are a lot of things to do in Austin but the traffic is outrageous that you really don't want to have to drive in it. You start to learn when to get out to avoid the stop n go driving.

I moved here from an area close to Boulder, Colorado, and now wish I could go back. Although I'm from Galveston, Texas and Austin was always THE place to be, I love Colorado and feel like Boulder was more like home.

Austin is great if you love live music and bars. That's a big attraction to the young crowd but it's not much different than other big cities to those who are not into the bar Read More

Chicago to Austin - 5/23/2007
I believe it is important to come down and visit before moving here. There are many great places. As far as avoiding anything East of I35, that doesn't give all information. The previous poster who brought up the Round Rock and Pflugerville as nice places and are out of Austin as suburbs, they do have good schools and lost of shopping, and LOTS of traffic. West areas are higher priced. However, East of I-35 (I'm not talking just East of Central Austin), but the East suburbs, are where all the growth will be occuring. Cities like Manor, Elgin, Bastrop, etc. are growing. And south in Kyle and Buda, they are also growing. East of I-35 will be getting the new Samsung location, also a major movie production company is moving in. Two of the towns got main street renewal programs from the governor. The housing Northeast is going steady, East and Southeast will be growing as in just the cities above, there are plans to build more than 10,000 homes. I recommend using bestplaces to Read More
