In Response to Conservative Couple Moving to Austi - 6/24/2006
Austin is just as liberal as Portland, only it's more militant because it's a speck of liberal blue in a sea of conservative red. You might want to reconsider Dallas, as it is much more conservative than Austin. Dallas isn't a bad city for its size, and it is principally conservative and Baptist.

I myself sit politely on the other side of the fence from you. I am a gay liberal, and Austin is so tolerant and accepting that gays don't have to huddle together in one neighborhood. There is no predominantly gay neighborhood (Austin has to be the biggest city in the US without a predominantly gay neighborhood). We are literally everywhere in Austin.

Like I said, Dallas is a nice conservative place to live. It's known for its shopping and restaurants, and thanks to DFW airport, you can fly non-stop almost anywhere in the world.

Good luck finding the right place. Austin will not give you the wide berth you are looking for, and Dallas is a much Read More

Wheelchair Accessibility Overall - 6/24/2006
Hi, I am in a power wheelchair and would like to relocate. Can someone tell me how accessible the city is in terms of public transportation, housing and the university campus? How is a disabled person generally viewed in terms of opportunities available to someone who is physically limited, but not mentally limited?  Read More

Austin is a great place to live - 6/23/2006
I have lived here for the last 4 years. Austin is a great place to live and to raise your kids. I have 2 kids, 11,12 yrs old. We live in Northwest of Austin, out in the suburbs. Recently moved from Atlanta. The RoundRock school district is one of the best. That is why we chose this area.
Yes, you can get cheap housing here. And yes, you can get expensive housing here. We chose the house because it is in the best school district.
Austin has quite a few high tech jobs and since it is a college town, it is much more liberal than the rest of Texas.
People are very friendly and much more tolerant than majority of TX.
Yes, it is hot BUT it is not as humid as Houston or Atlanta for that matter. So it is very tolerable. But that's just hot one or two months in the summer, the rest is just beautiful weather year round.
As someone here used to say "we have 11 months of liveable weather.... and the other month is just hot Read More

Housing in Austin - 6/22/2006
I have been doing a lot of research in regard to California residents relocating to the Austin area. It was during this research I came across this sight. I was doing this research because I had the same question.

I would say 70% of my buyers have relocated here from either California or Florida. The demographics of the buyers seem to very different as well. Many are moving her because of work transfers. We have a lot of high-tech jobs similar to areas of California. Many are young couple, starting families that have come to the conclusion that they are not willing to sacrifice starting a family to afford a house. Here they can do both. They would need two incomes in California to pay a mortgage. Some are empty-nesters that realize they can sell there and buy here for cash and either help fund college eductions for their children OR have the retirement they have always dreamed of (travel, golf, etc.) I have also noticed that as more and more individuals are Read More

Say No To Austin, Texas - 6/22/2006
Please, stop raving about how cheap it is to live in Austin, and how it's not that populated. The city population may be just under 700,000, however, when you look at Austin's entire metro area, it's more like 1.5 million. Austin has outgrown itself quite rapidly in the last few years and this has led to more traffic (an ongoing nightmare for the last decade), pollution, crime, and over priced real Read More

Go home! - 6/22/2006
Shut up! Quit advertising Austin, we have too many people moving here and the property taxes has rised because of that! I was born and raised here, they are cutting down trees, closing private lands and rivers into public parks, apts, or hotels. Go find another place to squeeze in!! It used to be a friendly town, now theres big city slickers trashing Austin everywhere.

I remember 10 years ago when everybody started moving here, there were bumper stickers everywhere "Welcome to Texas now go home".Read More

Conservative couple considering move to austin are - 6/21/2006
My husband and I are in the early stages of planning a move to Austin. Both of our companies are large in the area so transfering should'nt be a problem. We had also considered moving to the fort worth/dallas area. He favors a move to Austin. We are conservative, friendly, baptists who want to find a better economy, political enviroment, and less expensive place to live. We currently reside in Portland OR and are sick of the liberal attitude, lack of economic opportunity and high cost of housing. We also have a young daughter so any information on the availability, cost and quality of daycare would be helpful. Any information or opinions as to whether this would be a good move for us would be much appreciated. Read More

Diversity in Austin - 6/21/2006
Nicholle,

My current project takes me to Hollywood every other week and I wouldn't trade the Hill Country for the Hollywood Hills. As for the culinary scene, you will not be disappointed (although I have yet to find Ethiopian as good as Merkato in Li'l Ethiopia). Finally, I read in the local paper that a developer is building "Art Lofts" (sort of a living/working studio) near the downtown area. Bottom line --- you will not regret leaving LA for Austin.
