Austin is much more than a college town - 3/5/2010
I really disagree with Jim's view. First, yes property taxes are relatively high, but the other taxes are pretty much as they are in any larger city. If he doesn't like the cost of living, perhaps he hasn't lived on either coast or even Midwest cities like Chicago. The wages in these places are marginally higher but clearly over-run by the cost of goods, taxes, and real estate. I also don't understand Jim's comment about the suburbs being more expensive. I live in Cedar Park and my house would cost $100K more if I was even ten minutes closer in.
I believe that Texas in general is one of the best places to live because of the cost of living, lower taxes, and overall economic strength. Austin in particular offer a more laid back culture, a unique style with plenty of recreational opportunities and frankly is the garden spot of all the major cities in the state.
The employment situation is a bit challenging however. The city is still very high-tech
