Not as Good as it appears - 9/4/2006
Having moved here from San Diego, CA, we can say that overall it is not cheaper to live in TX. You may get more house for you money, but property taxes are astonding. We pay almost as much in property tax as we paid for state income tax and property tax in CA. Utilities costs are disproportionately high in TX. Food costs are equivalent to CA overall, with some lower and some higher. Insurance for vehicles and homes is much higher in TX. As a general statement, dining out and other entertainment in our area is "disadvantaged". I have been told the Austin San Antonio and Houston tend to be better, but with only limited trips there I can't make a judgement.
