Middle of the Road - 10/31/2007
I've lived in several places, from the Deep South to the Deep Southwest, and I must say that Irving, Texas, physically in the very center of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, is very much in the middle of the geographic as well as demographic spectrum. It isn't too much or too little of anything. Sure, we could live in a setting with more natural beauty, less traffic, more spring and fall, less summer and winter--but hey, we all have to live somewhere, and this version of somewhere has served my partner and me rather well for the little-over five years since we moved here from El Paso. (Yes, El Paso, a charming holdout of the true wild west that gets an undeserved bad rap from lots of people who've never strayed beyond Interstate Read More

Irving - 6/7/2007
I work in Irving, so I am here every day. First off, let's mention that the city has grown I believe "7,300 %" since 1970. Don't believe me ? Look it up sometime. David Brooks mentioned that in an article on suburbia a couple years back. The result is a kind of "United Nations" effect, with pretty much every nationality represented here: Indians, Chinese, a big new Islamic center (I see more and more women in head scarves), Finns (Nokia), Germans, etc. etc. The city is thus very new and not very representative of the U.S. The "Los Colinas" area is nice, very upscale, clean, very "corporate". Irving still allows smoking indoors in public, even in the restaurants (Dallas and Arlington and now Plano all have clean indoor air ordanances). Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has its world headquaters here, and I recently saw a police car here that said "DUI Unit". Drink at your own risk in Irving ! Last year the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) sent agents into bars and hotel Read More

Smack-dab middle of the Metroplex - 1/17/2006
The best descriptor of Irving is "middle." It is not the best Dallas suburb, and not the worst, although "D" Magazine in 2004 ranked it nearer the bottom than the city would like to admit. There are good and bad "pockets" in terms of neighborhood quality, ranging from the southernmost portions being taken over by slum lords and the northernmost being taken over by developers of pseudo-European tract mansionettes. A fly-over shows a sea of the same grey-shingled, hip-roofed, zero-lot-line subdivisions that you will find surrounding just about every major metro area in the U.S. Irving has a designated "Heritage District" in its 100-year-old downtown area; sadly, this is relegated to a few streets of mostly retail shops, scant historical buildings, and not many historic homes. Like the rest of the DFW Metroplex, Irving has at least one church at every intersection, a miasma of strip malls and freeways, and very little natural beauty. Aside from that, anything one could want is Read More
