Vermont wannabees try to down-play wealth in this - 5/10/2008
When shopping for Real Estate in Winhall, the thing that may intitially surprise most metro-suburban buyers from high priced markets is that in this scenic and rural state, where pirces are comparitive bargains, houses aren't cheap. The reason is that most of the owners in this town, didn't grow up here. The town is built on the money of second home owners and retirees, many of whom are escaping their expensive and competitive urban/suburban lives in exchange for the gorgeous countryside, great air and the many outdoor activitities - including several major ski areas in winter. Great views and "rustic chic" are the most valuable real estate attributes here. Most well-off outsiders try to blend in with the natives (of which there are few) although they would probably not want to be mistaken for one.
