What BestPlaces Users Say about Charlottesville
Charlottesville, Virginia is a city located in the central part of the state, known for its historical landmarks, lively downtown area, and vibrant culture. It is home to the University of Virginia and has a population of approximately 46,000 people. The city has been ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States by various publications, but it has also faced controversy in recent years due to its history and political climate. Here are some user reviews from BestPlaces.net about living in Charlottesville.
From user "Jenny" - "I've lived in Charlottesville for 10 years and I absolutely love it here. The city has a great mix of urban and rural areas, which means you get the best of both worlds. The downtown area has amazing restaurants and local shops, and there are always events going on. It's also a very educated and diverse community."
From user "Tom" - "I moved to Charlottesville a few years ago for a job and I have to say, it's been a bit of a disappointment. The cost of living is pretty high, especially for housing, and the traffic can be a nightmare. I also find the political climate to be quite tense and polarizing. It's a beautiful city, but I'm not sure if I'll be staying here long-term."
From user "Sarah" - "Charlottesville is a great place to raise a family. The schools are top-notch and there are plenty of family-friendly activities to do. I also appreciate the emphasis on preserving the city's history and culture. It's definitely a unique and special place to call home."
From user "Mark" - "I've lived in Charlottesville my whole life and I've seen a lot of changes, some good and some not so good. The city has been through a lot, but it's a resilient community. I will say that the cost of living has skyrocketed in recent years and it's becoming harder for working-class families to afford to live here. But overall, I still love Charlottesville and wouldn't want to live anywhere else."

Arrogance is truly thy name!! - 7/15/2010
I completely agree with the review from BigD that the people here have an entitlement I have not quite encountered elsewhere having lived in plenty of big cities throughout my life. I also agree that unless you have a family, this is no place to be. It's expensive, unless you are a local or went to UVA you will have difficulty finding a niche, there are things to do but, they are expensive, and for what you are paying in housing and general cost of living, just live in DC. Do yourself a favor. Plus, if you get anywhere out of town, you are surrounded by one of the clannish backwoods tribes (the police won't even go to some of the back areas) of Appalachia. There are MUCH better places to live, don't waste your time, money or self esteem on this place.

Charlottesville is amazing but expensive - 3/8/2010
Charlottesville is your typical university town - only with a few extras. We have the academic cultural items, plus a art scene. The bar and nightlife are beginning to finally show signs of life besides just places for college students. The area has amazing natural beauty and lots to do out of doors... so why am I leaving? - As young professional starting out, the real estate prices and lack of affordable housing are forcing me out of the area.

Arrogance thy name is Charlottesville - 9/25/2008
The people here have a rare arrogance, so much so, that even transplanted New Yorkers are taken aback. There is an undercurrent of hostility in this town that can be found in every business. The people working in the service industry seem very unhappy and hostile. Considering the cost of living here, that is no

Yes, Virginia there is crime in Charlottesville - 9/25/2008
Many people move to this town of approx. 40,000 and believe there is no crime here. Nothing could be further from the truth. While violent crime is an irregular occurence, drug and gang activity is very high. There have been identified no less than six operating drug gangs here. We also have our very own FBI office despite the small size of the town. It is possible to live a relatively safe life in Charlottesville, but be aware that danger does indeed exist here. It has a way of popping up when you least expect it. If you're in downtown Charlottesville and visiting the famous open mall, exercise caution, especially late at

Cost of Living in Charlottesville - 6/22/2008
As one moves closer towards the University of Virginia, the cost of living increases, more notably with respect to real estate and rental rates, which is to be expected due to increased demand. The job situation is interesting, in that there are a number of quite highly educated individuals ready and willing to work for lesser wages. These "university transients" are looking for short term solutions and accept lower salaries as a result, possibly just to make ends meet. I feel that the median wage/salary in this area does not allow for much disposable income due to the higher cost of

University Life - 10/23/2007
As a politically interested student at UVA, I am aware of how many extraordinary opportunities there are in Charlottesville to get politically involved and see significant speakers right here in town, despite living an hour from the state's capital, and two hours from Washington D.C. The proximity to Richmond and D.C. is also

Number one city....? - 9/4/2007
We moved here thinking it would be a great place to raise our new family. It is very expensive here. The city grew so fast that companies salaries do not compare to the cost of living. Housing is very expensive, a lot of hippies and transients in the city. Groceries are also very expensive compared to where we came from. The traffic is insane!! We avoided the DC area but it is just as bad here. It takes us 20 minutes to go 5 miles...no joke. More a good place for singles not
