Ah, Richmond - 4/20/2006
I have lived in Richmond for a long time- That is, since my parents relocated from Roselle Park, NJ in 1990.

Since I have grown up here, I would have to say that depending on the county, the school system is good on funding, but they are no different from any other school system when it comes to violence. The high school I went to in Chesterfield automatically locks all the doors from the outside, so 1) you cannot skip class and come back, and 2) so if you are 2 seconds tardy you have detention (because the classroom doors lock from the outsdie too). The schools are overcrowded, and they keep building schools... but only in the areas that are higher income.

The city of Richmond has been a ghost town, until VCU and other outside entities started pumping money into Richmond. The city government could have cared less. Doug Wilder (former governer) is now the Mayor and I think he is trying to turn crime around, but that will take forever. This state is a Read More

Richmond-for Ruth - 4/15/2006
Hi Ruth! I wonder if you are the Ruth who posted on Portland as well.If so, it is ironic-I am from Richmond, and I interviewed in Portland yesterday-considering moving there..so, I'd welcome any other info on Portland. Henrico county spends A LOT of money on schools. Downtown Richmond is in transition-it is an armpit. Not a place to be after dark. Unlike Portland-you do NOT want to use public transportation. Away from the center of downtown, you would probably like Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom--there are old brick tobacco warehouses converted into great shops, eateries, and lofts. Brown's Island and the Iron Works are nice. A place to look into for schools would be the Short Pump/West End area. The homes are a little more expensive, but worth it in terms of quality of life, and school. There is plenty of shopping, entertainment in close proximity there, and the schools are Read More

For anyone wanting to argue about crime in Richmond? Just state the facts. Richmond is CURRENTLY rated the 5th worst city for crime ...... now get this ......in the ENTIRE COUNTRY!!! Thats the whole USA folks!!

It is what it is.

Pick up a local paper, read it on line, watch it on the news or whatever way you want to experience it, but facts are facts. Is it any worse than other medium sized cities? (Richmond is small compared to Boston or NY or even Tampa) Well duh!!! Of course the crimes worse here. You don't get rated the 5th highest crime rated city by accident!!! Its earned. Murder by murder. Rape by rape. Violent crime by violent Read More

Leaving after living here my entire life - 4/9/2006
It is a pretty city, crime is not as bad as it seems since it is limited to certain areas that if you don't live in them, no one seems to care. It is still fighting the civil war - for example a big stink when a small statue of Lincoln was put up on a Federal Civil War site. Folks are getting ruder; drivers are awful, there is no mass transit - sprawl is a problem with no plans to control it. The state is more and more like Alabama each year. The summers are awful - hot, humid, winters boring since there is usually no snow. City government is a joke. BTW, VA is so conservative, its political make up still goes to Colonial VA. Cities are totally independent of the counties. It gets no support from the neighboring counties which makes the divide between "them and us", Black and White bad. I am moving to the Rockies. If you are liberal or progressive, Richmond City has some nice areas to live in, but the area and the Commonwealth (state) as a whole is not the place to Read More

Midlothian/Chesterfield County - 4/6/2006
Political city, with high crime. Especially, Chesterfield county. The public schools are horrific with great test scores, but they don't tell you about the overcrowding. Or, how unwelcoming the schools are to parents. You are not even allowed to walk your kindergarteners into school the first day. The principals are lousy, and have huge ego/power trips. The school board is a joke, and we moved due to the schools in Chesterfield Read More
