Great Small Town Outside of DC - 2/9/2015
I grew up in Vienna, on a farm, and while the town has grown and changed quite a bit since those days, it still has a small town vibe and strong sense of community. Being just outside of Washington, DC and not far from the foothills of the Virginia countryside, there is plenty to see, do, explore, taste. A diverse population lends itself to a wide variety of delicious ethnic eateries in the area. They still hold parades down the main street through town, and plenty of festivals throughout the year. If shopping is your thing, Tysons Corner is a small city center unto itself with the best in upscale proprietors. Very convenient transportation options with multiple metro rail stations and metro bus. Read More

Nice, but not cheap. - 3/8/2014
Vienna, VA is a nice community and town, but it ain't cheap. As we have started looking for places to retire, I have found out that the property taxes we pay here are much higher than most places (easily twice as much, if not more). In Vienna, you pay your property taxes to the county and to the town. The town property taxes are about 15 to 20 percent of the county property taxes.

Gas prices are higher in this area. If you get out of the metro area you can save about 20 or 30 cents per gallon, but that is not very convenient. Food prices (dining out and groceries) are higher too.

The housing has gotten very expensive. We were lucky to move into Vienna when we did. I don't think we could or would want to now. For a very nice, new, four bedroom, single family home you are looking at about $1,000,000 to about $1,200,000. It is crazy! You can find homes for less, but they are much smaller or older.

But the town is nice and the neighborhoods are Read More

Schools in Vienna, VA - 6/3/2012
Schools are very good. Our local school (Colvin Run),teaches to a high standard, offers lots of "specials" and has a strong character education program. My kids love this school even though, from 3rd grade onwards, the homework load is a little heavy in my Read More

Cost of Living - 9/5/2010
Vienna is a wonderful town that tries to give a small town atmosphere to a wealthy suburban town. Vienna is just outside the beltway that goes around Washington, DC. Many people feed off our government (taxpayers dollars) and it is quite a feast. Consequently, the cost of living here is quite high. Energy is not too bad since Dominion VA Power using a lot of nuclear generated power. But food, housing, and transporation are very high. For people moving here from a lower cost of area, it can be quite a culture shock. But it is a clean and safe place to live with lots of family activities to enjoy.

My Kind of Town - 4/16/2009
There is a larger area called Vienna, but I am speaking of life within the Vienna town limits.

Vienna is a conservative town (the largest town in the country, I believe). They have strict rules about zoning, how many colors a business can have on its sign, limits on the use of neon, etc. They see themselves as a family town, and they strive to keep it that way. They have been leaders in recycling trash, probably more for the financial benefits than for ecological ones. They are fiscally vary responsible and know how to pinch a penny. This said, they also are willing to turn down federal funding for road improvements if it means they have to cut down too many mature trees! Those trees are part of what makes it an exceptionally attractive community. They have several parks and have put legislation in place so that there is no possibility of selling that valuable land in the future. The parks will stay! And they are well-used.

Vienna is Great if you like the DC Metro Area - 8/17/2008
For those of you that like to be close to a major metro area, Vienna is great. The community is very tight, the schools are ranked very high, there are tons of sports and recreational opportunities and the close proximity to DC and the numerous beltway bandit companies makes for a very strong job outlook. If, however, you're not looking to live close to a major metro area, I'd suggest looking elsewhere because Vienna sits about 2 miles outside of the DC Read More

Beautiful Vienna, VA - 5/7/2007
Pro: Great small town close to the Tyson's Corner metropolis and Washington DC. The beautiful Shenandoah mountains are within an hour and 1/2 drive to the west. The Shore and beaches are all within 2 hours or so (with traffic). Terrain is beautiful. NYC is only 5 hours away. So much to do and the area reaks with history. Best schools and medical facilities.
Con: Traffic and the high prices of Read More
