My Hometown - 5/7/2009
My family settled in Stevenson about the time of it's incorporation. 1908-1910. My family history includes incorporating the Bank of Stevenson, and My grandfather was a State Rep. and served in State government for many years.
I feel fortunate for having grown up in Stevenson Washington. Little did I realize at the time, how beautiful the Gorge was. The area was rich in timber money, and life was comfortable for the residents. The schools were top notch. There were no tax levies due to timber money granted to the schools.
I finally realized how beautiful the Gorge was when I left for college, and would come home for visits on the holidays. I would sit with my car parked at the water front, and just listen to the radio, and marvel at the panoramic view of the Gorge. Of course my favorite time of year in the Gorge was summer. Growing up in the Gorge - 5/3/2009
We moved from Buffalo, NY to Stevenson, WA when I was in 2nd grade. Big Change! Timber used to fuel the economy: people had jobs and the schools were funded with timber money. When I was around 10, some of the mills closed and the schools turned to state money for funding. Schools were not better off when this happened! When I was 18, the community turned to tourism and most of my high school friends work at the local resorts. It's a beautiful place; if you visit, go to Walking Man Brewery (za' best) and check out the Blues, Brews, and BBQ festival in June. Skamania Co.
