Stevenson, WA
My Hometown -
5/7/2009My family settled in Stevenson about the time of it's incorporation. 1908-1910. My family history includes incorporating the Bank of Stevenson, and My grandfather was a State Rep. and served in State government for many years.
I feel fortunate for having grown up in Stevenson Washington. Little did I realize at the time, how beautiful the Gorge was. The area was rich in timber money, and life was comfortable for the residents. The schools were top notch. There were no tax levies due to timber money granted to the schools.
I finally realized how beautiful the Gorge was when I left for college, and would come home for visits on the holidays. I would sit with my car parked at the water front, and just listen to the radio, and marvel at the panoramic view of the Gorge. Of course my favorite time of year in the Gorge was summer. The Gorge has it's own weather patterns, and although Stevenson Washington is just 42 miles from Portland Oregon, Stevenson will experience much colder weather in the winter, and much warmer weather in the Summer. The town is influenced more by the winds of the Gorge, which come out of the east primarily. Portland is more subject to the coastal winds of the Pacific Ocean to the west. What will often times create rain in Portland Oregon, will be a major snow event in the Gorge and Stevenson Washington. The Town is situated in the center of the Gorge which is where the Columbia River travels through the cascade mountain range, acting as the border between Washington State and Oregon. The gorge ranges from high desert beauty in the East end, to rugged timber beauty in the west end. It is a perfect spot for Artists, and summer sport enthusiasts. Traveling over the Bridge of the Gods, while looking down, you will notice the fishing platforms of the Native Americans along the banks of the river. Stevenson and the Gorge celebrates it's diverse history, and culture.
I now live in Portland Oregon, and have recently become interested in photography, and find my favorite photos come from the Columbia River Gorge, and Stevenson Washington. I would like to move back to my home town and retire one day.
