Blaine; secret! - 11/7/2013
Sitting on the border just before you cross into British Columbia, Canada is the small town of Blaine. Just to the south is Bellingham (pop about 75,000). The area "feels bigger" than it really is with good medical care facilities, good education including a state university, theater and cultural enticements. Part of this is due to a combination of tourism and thousands of Canadians that shop here because it is cheaper. However, be under no illusion that what makes this area great is the cost of living (it is high), or jobs (not a hot spot by any stretch of the imagination), or weather (it has the least amount of sunny days of anywhere in the continental U.S.! But we also have the snow board capital of America (Mount Baker), national parks, eagles, whales, lots of islands, fishing, crabs, rocky wind-swept beaches, and two major cities (Vancouver, BC and Seattle WA) within an hour. What makes Blaine excellent in all this is that cost of living is lower here than in Lynden, Read More

Life in Blaine - 11/1/2012
Have lived in Blaine and nearby areas (Birch Bay, Bellingham) on and off about 3 years. If you like peaceful surroundings and the laid back life (for some, might be boring)...and don't mind the long, dreary, miserable months of rain (and cold) during the winter, this is the place for you. But if you are an active person, like a lot of exciting things to do, best to just come for a visit and see for yourself, then move on to more active & exciting cities father south...or just north of Blaine. Summers are great, however; relatively mild compared to other places we've lived like Arizon, eastern sector of Oregon, and southern California. Unfortunately, there is not much to see in Blaine in the summer. The beach? You mean the mudflats? I have seen better ones in our travels worldwide. Even southern coastal areas of Washington and all along the seacoast of Oregon have much better beaches. There is the water slides park in Birch Bay. Opens only between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Read More

Yes, There is a Perfect Place Left in the U.S. - 9/28/2012
When you wonder where in the U.S. remains a Mayberry, a serene, small, Cleaver family town, this is it. I didn't want to leave. Pat at the Post Office, streets so wide you can stop your car in the middle and talk side-by-side with another, trees arched over neighborhood streets with houses that have front porches, a marina, good eats, the Buy Rite and Ace Hardware, the Canadian border a bike ride away, other dreamy towns in every direction, upscale and down scale, picket fences, fruit stands, old empty barns, cat tails, Mt. Baker views, coffee in an old caboose or tug boat, sunflowers and apple trees growing in big back yards ... you CAN go home again. Read More
