I'm sure it has its flaws, but what stands with me is that everyone whom i meet here is *so polite!* .. People smile and wave you through in traffic. They speak to you with dignity when they wait on you. I don't know if i could ask for a better place for one's mental health when it comes to the people with whom one will have to engage. It rains here a lot. We joke that when the forecast says a 50% chance of rain that it will rain 50% of the day. However, when the sun shines it is beautiful. It is green year round. Puget sound is 1/2 hour away and you can be in the mountains in an hour. Although Mt Vernon lies between Bellingham and Seattle (very large cities) it still has a rural Read More

Great Place for Outdoor Recreation - 2/23/2009
Even though we live in a rainy place, people enjoy the outdoors all year long. Biking through the Skagit Valley flats offers scenic views of distant mountains, flocks of migrating snow geese and trumpeter swans in winter, blooming tulip fields in spring, and lush crops in summer. There is water everywhere so kayaking and fishing is always popular. Snow sport opportunities are 1-2 hrs away and hiking/camping spots all over. This is one beautiful place with daily scenery that is never disappointing!

Changing face of Mount Vernon in last decade - 1/25/2009
The agrcultural base of Skagit Valley has given rise to a dramatic increase in the Latino population in the Mount Vernon area. Since the state of Washington has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, it has become home to many illegal aliens from many South American countries as well as illegals from Mexico. There use to be little or no gang activity in Mount Vernon but this has changed due to an apathetic view of the local city government. Now there are at least 6 distinct Latino gangs operating with Mount Vernon as their hub. They bring with them the usual gang activities - increases in drug useage, prostitution, malicious attacks against citizens and intimidation of anyone who would stand up against the gangs. Think twice before settling here. I have been in this area since 1979 and unfortunately it continues to be degraded by these evil Read More
