A Hub for Outdoor Activities - 2/18/2021
I was born in Beckley, moved away and lived in a smaller town, and then two major cities. I have been back for 14 years. Beckley is not for everyone. If you are looking for a major city, then move to one. If you are looking for a tiny, quaint town, this is not it either. Beckley is bigger than its population, because the city limits are drawn really small and the city refuses to incorporate outlying areas. The shopping and medical facilities serve a region of over 200,000 people. Therefore, it has a lot more to offer than other cities with a population listed as under 20,000.
The real value in this town, as I see it, is in its location in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. Beckley is the hub of Southern West Virginia's tourism industry. There are countless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. There is a ski resort, 20 minutes from town. Don’t move here - 5/15/2019
Born and raised here. Moved to Florida for 17 years. The only reason I moved back was to care for parent. Though I love the seasons and wanted to leave Florida, this is not the place to live. It’s dirty, high crime for a town so small, lots of drugs and zero culture. If you have kids, DON’T bring them here! Education is horrible! Too bad considering the natural, majestic scenery.

Things To Do - 6/7/2005
Well, if you're a high school student(I am) there is nothing to do except go the the mall(really small after you walk around 9000000 times) and go to super walmart. there are 2 movie theatres but they are closing and building new ones...but really, how many times can u go to the movies!? Good news, Raliegh County schools get alot of snow days so kids will miss about 4-8 days a year for that!!
Other than that, there is alot of smokers, drinkers, and just rednecks(scary ones)
If you are interested in Beckley because of the proximity to rafting...think again! Once you live here it will be sooo boring to go rafting....in fact many(most) have never gone rafting....and as for skiiing (at Winterplace) its about 30 minutes, but there really are only a few slopes so I dont see the big deal...and only a few people I know actually go there.
