Life in Preston County - 7/20/2009
Most natives to the area believe everyone they encounter was born and raised there. No one can seem to appreciate a new comer. High unemployment, and no change of that in sight. 50 cents over the minimum wage is a high paying job!No one, retail, professional or otherwise seems to be interested in this area. I inherited land there but can't seem to find a plumber, electrician or carpenter within 70 miles. It is nothing but beautiful although the solitude and isolation can become overwhelming. Most folks have never seen a dentist, don't own a computer, (certainly no high speed internet available now or possibly ever) and have no clue what a fine dining experience is. But all have at least one pick up truck, wave when you pass by and would give the shirt off their back if you need it. Hard working individuals, sunrise to sunset. Stunning mountain views. Gorgeous creeks and forest. Lots of snowfall too. Shame it is so poverty stricken and illiterate. State took over the public county
