I make a good amount of money and I'm still broke - 8/30/2022
I live in Jackson and I can tell you for sure it sucks. I'm currently a student in college so I don't bring in any income but my husband makes about 200,000 a year..... it's still not enough. Our rent is about 5000 dollars a month for a three bedroom two bathroom apartment that is very small. The grocery stores suck, one of them has terrible chicken, one of them has awful beef, and the other one is for health nuts. The roads are pretty good in the winter for how much snow we get but really the only enjoyable time to be here is April and November. Those two months are what we call "off season" and it's basically when the tourists leave. Construction here is almost impossible because of all the parks and permits. The town is very poorly designed and extremely overpopulated. Basically don't choose to live here unless you have enough money to slap the president without getting in trouble and if you enjoy never leaving your Read More

what a joke!!! - 9/5/2021
What a rip-off!!! I had wanted to see Jackson, Wy for many years and found it to be very snooty. The motels were outrageously expensive. The entire city is over-rated. I tried to get a sandwich from the local dominos and they told me to leave. How rude!!!! Gas was really high since I needed premium. It cost me $4.75/gallon. I tried to eat at several restaurants and they didn't open till 5pm. I took a private tour of teton np and the tour guide was late and all we did was ride around. We stopped one time for restrooms. It was another mistake. $650 for 5 hours. The only thing nice about my trip was staying at the Virginia Motel. It too was pricey at $350/night but it was the cheapest in town and it had also been recently remodeled. The staff was friendly unlike other residents of Jackson. I won't return. Lucky for me that I only stayed 2 days. Read More

Easterners Playing Cowboy - 7/26/2020
Jackson, like so many other wealthy towns, is composed of the wealthy who made their money elsewhere and those who serve them. Those who serve are actually pretty nice here. Sadly, as you drive into town you'll no doubt see a Massachusetts license plate, then a New Jersey one, and you begin to realize that a small sliver of the I-95 corridor broke off, and ended up 2000 miles away in the middle of the country. And it's the wrong kind of Easterner. The ones who vacation on a pile of other Easterners to impress each other (see Martha's Vineyard). The kind who value being in the right place with the right people, in the right social pecking order, over actually having a good time, as they're too tightly wound, thin skinned and self conscious. If you want to buy Western art there's no better place. If you want to have a better time, go to Sun Valley. The "Elk Preserve" is the biggest let down. It's just an open space created to keep out development that's been poorly window Read More

A world of two extremes. - 4/24/2020
Jackson is pretty interesting. It's a land of billionaires and millionaires. From the 10, 000 sq ft vacation home used a few months by one person to people renting crawl spaces. If you see enough of Jackson you'll find it's a micrcosim of the nation's growing inequality, and a nearly nonexistent middle class. The same middle class jobs in the 80s or 90s where the workers owned homes, raised families, and lived in Jackson are now filled with commuters, single individuals or the recently immigrated sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with 8 people. As these generations grow old and retire they are selling or renting their once middle class homes for a rate only the wealthy can afford. Gone is the American ideal of owning land and a home for most in Jackson. It's a vacation town, crowded noisy and frustrating to actually work in, in the summer and cold, snow covered in the winter. It has diversity as it continually outsources its employment to keep the town running and with many who Read More

Public Transportation - 12/6/2009
The public transportation in Jackson is amazing for a town of this size. The bus within the town is free, it runs every 15 min during peak times of the day. The bus to Teton Village runs just as often and the cost is around $3.00. There is also a commuter bus to Alpine, WY, Swan Valley, and Teton Read More

High quality of life - 11/22/2009
Despite the high cost of living in Jackson it is the one of the most beautiful places to live. If you like the outdoors, you can ski, snowmobile, hike, fish, climb mountains, hunt and camp. If you're not in to the outdoors there are galleries, museums, concerts and plays. The shopping will put you back quite a bit so it helps to have deep pockets. It can be worth the high Read More

cost vs quality - 11/17/2009
Jackson Hole is wonderful if you can pay for it. It is the wealthiest per capita county in the country. The working class needs to work two jobs to make ends meet, or simply be replaced by illegal aliens. The real estate market is geared for the super wealthy, and the middle classes only opportunity to own a home is to commute to neighboring areas or buy deed restricted housing on a qualifying basis. I have lived here for 30 years and have watched Jackson Hole become an elitist refuge. What you get for the high prices is one of the most beautiful settings in the country. And a lot of people are willing to work two jobs so they can experience all that Jackson has to Read More

Expensive - 12/23/2008
Jackson is a very expensive place to live. Mostly because we have a housing problem. THus the homes that are here are worth alot as they are hard to come buy. Rent here is around 1,800-2,200 a month for a three bedroom and it is impossible to find a home for sale under 500,000 or even Read More

David - 5/18/2007
I've lived in Jackson for a number of years and I am reminded daily of why I moved here. The skiing, hiking, biking, climbing and boating is the best in the country. If you move here for the right reasons,ie a love for the outdoor lifestyle, then you won't be disappointed. Contrary to another comment, I live in town on the east side and I have a perfect view of the Tetons from my backyard. During the summer tourists are everywhere, however they don't venture far from town so the best places are still quiet. You eventually learn to ingnore them. Yes, it is expensive. No, we do not have the culture of a Seattle, or Portland. But then again you can walk to dinner safely after dark, there is no interstate drone in the background and everyone (locals that is) is amazingly friendly. If you are an outdoorsman/woman, there is simply no comparison and if you feel you need a little "culture" now and again, hop a flight to New York and remind yourself how good you really have Read More

Plan on buying a home? Not your best bet... - 12/10/2006
Jackson is prohibitively expensive. Families that would normally buy a home for $150K back in their suburban middle-sized hometowns come here for the skiing and have to buy something more around $500K. For that price, you could buy a home in most any big city like Seattle or Portland. I'm not sure if the trade-off is worth it; sure, it's beautiful out here, but culturally lacking unless you're into jam bands, are a hippy, or are a casual square dance at the bar every Wednesday Read More
