Left Sheridan for Greener Pastures - 11/9/2013
Just wanted to point out that despite some of the reviews here, Sheridan's cost of living is below the national average. Housing is not cheap, but by other posts here, you'd think it was astronomical. I am a real estate agent here, and would contribute the following: It is a small housing market, and by that I mean, it has never been overbuilt like places where housing prices collapse because of the immense oversupply of homes. Even though our market has softened like other parts of the country, we are a little insulated from massive depreciation due to the size of the community and continued demand for housing.
Speaking to the issue of race, it is probably 97% Caucasian, so if you are not white, people will notice you, there will be curiosity. Not everyone here is racist though, not even close. I apologize to anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of running into a bigot in our community, but bigots exist everywhere. Bigots are probably less obvious in larger Read More

high cost of housing - 8/29/2012
If you planning on moving to Sheridan, may i suggest to all who want to come here to investigate Sheridan's high price of housing. Sheridan is a decent clean town to live. but the cost of housing keeps people that work for a modest income from moving here. Many people who cannot afford to stay leave. Many of the wealthy do reside in the powderhorn residential area where million dollar homes abound. Sheridan is fast becoming the new latest version of a Jackson Hole environment. Montana, Wyoming, Colorado now have the dubious distinction of having the most expensive housing markets in the country.. so happy trails. and remember one thought. you cant live on the scenery. you can starve here in a beautiful mountain setting just like any other place in the Read More

not a good town for a working class family - 7/14/2012
Sheridan is a nice town. Plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking ,fishing and wild game hunting. But unfortunately, an average working family cannot afford to live here. The wealthy own the banks, the land and the real estate! And the ones who cannot afford to live here either pay high rent or move out of town! And many do leave! If your not part of the club, then your out the door, so If you thinking of moving here, make your decision wisely. Make sure you have a good job with a good income.Home prices in sheridan are nothing short of ridiculous!! It's all about status and money here!!! Sheridan is an attractive town for upper middle class families. Crime is low, which makes the town suitable for young families who want to raise their children in a safe Read More

Not a good place if you are a person of color. - 2/26/2012
I have lived in Sheridan, Wy for 6 years and there is one thing I've learned about this town and that is it's a very racist city. I'm a person of color and since living here I've been called every racist name in the book. Just last Friday a young black man was in a bar called Rails and 3 or more men walked up to him started a fight and then pulled out a noose and told him they would hang his behind. They told him that that was the way it was in Wyoming. If you are white it's ok you don't get hassled but if you are of color you get hassled. I'm leaving here soon because this is not the way I want to live, afraid to go places, for fear some people will jump me, hurt me, or kill me. The police are no better when I first moved to Sheridan, Wyoming the police stopped me for no good reason and when I ask the police why they stopped me his reponse was " I never seen you before ". The politics are as they do want they want to do, if you are of color you catch hell in this city. I find Read More

SHERIDAN - 1/21/2012

SHERIDAN LOOKS INVITING BUT LIVING IN THIS TOWN HAS BEEN A TOUGH EXPERIENCE.THE PLUS HERE IS THE BEAUTY OF THE BIG HORN MOUNTAINS WITH ALL OF THE OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND HERE. THE NEGATIVES: THE HOMES ARE OVERPRICED. SOME OF THE PEOPLE CAN BE FFIENDLY BUT THE LOCALS( NATIVES) WHO RESIDE HERE ARE SOMEWHAT STANDOFFISH, CLICKY AND NO SO FRIENDLY THE WORD OUTSIDERS IS A COMMON PHRASE SPOKEN HERE!!.MANY PEOPLE COME AND WANT TO LIVE IN SHERIDAN FOR A WHILE BUT THEY FIND OUT QUICKLY YOU CAN'T FIND SUITABLE WORK THAT PAYS A DECENT WAGE TO OFFSET THE RIDICULOUS COST OF HOUSING. IF YOUR NOT FROM SHERIDAN, YOU WILL NEVER FEEL LIKE THIS IS HOME IN MY OPINION. THE CULTURE FAVORS THE TOURISTS. THE SUPERWEALTHY CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF SHERIDAN.ITS ALL ABOUT CONTROL. THIS IS THE MOST FACIST COMMUNITY I HAVE EVER LIVED AND BY THE WAY. THE TOWN HAS SPENT MONEY INSTALLING CAMERAS EVERYWHERE IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR BEING WATCHED EVERYWHERE YOU GO!! AFTER SPENDING 9 PLUS Read More

Little town - 6/11/2010
I have lived in Sheridan my entire life. I love the beauty and the history of this town. However it is an extremely expensive place to live. If you don't have a great paying job then you wont have much. I know people that have to work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs just to make ends meet. I have recently been told that if you aren't originally from here it's hard to make friends and that we are very clicky. It makes me sad to see these things that ruin such a great little town but I'm afraid that it wont change. But if you can get past all that then you may love here Read More

About Sheridan - 7/1/2009
You aren't nuts. This is especially the case if you are moving from Surprise. Wy has exceptional funds for education (look at all the brand new schools). Almost no crime (Compared to AZ), a very friendly population and an economy the envy of the nation.

We used to live in Jackson, Wy (subsequent to that in AZ )(and then have moved to Sheridan (Jackson has been Californicated-the billionaires are kicking out the millionaires).

There is the little matter of the cold climate, but you'll get used to it

Insane cost of living. - 6/16/2007
I have lived in Sheridan, Wyoming since 2003. It was expensive when we moved here. But it has really gotten bad since. Sheridan is a beautiful place, and if one was a millionaire one could enjoy it. But if you work for a living and your are not at or near the top of the work chain be prepared to be working far to much to enjoy the area. Since I bought my house, its value has gone up 75K. Nice but the taxes have followed almost doubling in the past 2 years. The city has doubled the cost of water/ sewer/ and garbage services. The word is that Sheridan is turning in to another Jackson Hole. If thats the case, like Jackson there will be no one here for the service of the rest. I would not take this with a grain of salt, I am a licensed Architect and make a fair wage, but not enough for this area. Even the fast food places are paying 9 dollars and hour and can not keep Read More

Sheridan, WY - 3/20/2007
I am from AZ (Page, Prescott, Phx.). I have lived here 26 years. For me, I have enjoyed the low crime rate and beauty of the surrounding mountains. I have also enjoyed the small town.

I have not enjoyed the long winters, which can be severe (temps way down below zero at times). The sun shines in the winter, but has no warmth. (There are, a lot less sunny days here than AZ as well.) The locals are often natives and it is difficult to make good friends here. Shopping is limited and most people go to Billings, MT (1 hour 40 minutes away) to do major shopping. There is little cultural diversity here.

If you love winter sports, hunting, etc., are married and not worried about making friendships for a while...this may be for Read More
