For Illinois, Champaign is pretty decent - 8/30/2017
Champaign County has a lot of great influences from Chicago without the heavy traffic and skyrocketing prices. The downtown area is great with a lot of restaurants with outdoor seating. There are a few microbreweries in the area that are fantastic. There is plenty to do but you might have to search for it a little bit. I'm a member of social clubs (biking and skiing).
