I've lived in and feel attached to this state and part of the country but finally I'm ready for a change. The property taxes (highest in the country) make it pointless to own a home since the property taxes on a modest home are equal to a small mortgage. Four seasons? Yes, like Vietnam most of the summer and cold and messy most of the winter. That leaves about 2-3 months of decent weather. We live in a prosperous town in Bergen County. Despite the well-kept homes and tree-lined streets, we find life here is crowded and difficult. Horrific overpopulation and traffic, terrible rail service, rude, unhappy people talking on cellphones while driving SUV's carelessly, overstrained medical services, you get the picture. good:
1- lots to do and close proximity to philly and nyc
2- lots of wealth
3- lots of educated people
bad:
1- very high cost of living (you need to be making some serious coin to get ahead in NJ)
2- corruption in state government is rampant. incompetent politicians aplenty.

1- lots of poverty. when people in NJ are poor, they are REALLY poor

This state has really gone to the dogs. I was born and raised here in Scotch Plains, and I never thought I would have to move out of it. With the high, high cost of living; and my salary staying the same. It's time for me and my partner to move. Since he used to live in Arizona. We are looking at relocating there. The job market still seems to be decent there. Where as here in NJ, there are no jobs whatsoever. Not to mention I really hate cold weather. The warmer months are getting shorter and shorter here. While NJ has its good qualities, like the beaches and its vicinity to NYC, the cons outway the pros by far. There are some nicer areas of NJ, but everything is so tightly packed in most of this state, too many people, buildings, cars for the size of the state, you never feel like you can enjoy the good things without dealing with the bad. In most areas, and its getting worse everywhere, the traffic is horrendous. I take long cross-country road trips and I never experience traffic issues except when leaving and re-entering NJ. The one exception to that is going through the Baltimore/D.C. area if I'm heading south, but timed correctly that can be avoided as well. Growing up in a state with beaches was nice, and they were an important part of my life, however, the season to enjoy them, since it's so cold in the winter, is short, and the beaches are overcrowded and not well kept. New Jersey, particularly the shore area exceeded my expectations as a place to live but the taxes, both state and local, and the blatant curruption in government at all levels has finally driven me to leave. I'll miss the beautiful areas, the wealth of activities and great food but the cost:benefit has swung decidedly negative.
