Review of Aiken, South Carolina

SRS Site
Star Rating - 1/14/2015
I was in Aiken this past August looking for a farm. My husband and myself are big horse people from New York State. I was shocked to find out about one of the largest Nuclear Waste sites in the USA.

Everyone talks about how wonderful Aiken is for horse lovers, but nothing is said about SRS. I didn't hear a word about it until I left my hotel in Hilton Head. I was thinking, maybe I should be looking there instead. I stayed in Aiken one night and was out of there the next day. What are some of the views and comments about the SRS? Just wondering if I am the only one that is paranoid about it or horse lovers don't worry about it?

The Savannah River Site - visit www.srs.gov - continues to take nuclear waste, most recently from the Swiss (That's right, as in Europe.) as part of our current administration's nuclear non-proliferation agreements. There are various versions in the press about what will happen with all this waste, from shipping it to another state to high-tech recycling on-site into usable fuel. In vulgar terms, there is no certainty regarding the best way to flush the very full toilet that Aiken, South Carolina has become. Perhaps the saddest part of the story is that the fallout is common knowledge. Local media, including local television stations, regularly run advertisements that promote health and legal services to former employees and contractors who are suffering from radiation-related chronic illnesses as a result of their service at SRS.

Weapons-grade plutonium is in transit this week from Japan to the Savannah River Site, according to press reports - search Associated Press or the Kyodo News Agency. This transfer is the result of agreements reached in 2014 between the USA and Japan at a nuclear security summit. As part of the deal, the US accepts more than 700 pounds of plutonium and enriched uranium from Japan's accumulated stockpiles. For more information on the political and policy machines that rely on SRS to accept nuclear waste, contact the environmental group Savannah River Site Watch.
