Review of Anchorage, Alaska

HELP...Never been...seems like my place, BUT... ??
Star Rating - 7/10/2017
I live in Mammoth Lakes, CA...a gorgeous 4 season mountain resort community. I do love it but it is a bit small and I hate the heat in the summer. I love the cold and am an avid skier. I am also gay. So I am looking for a place with a colder climate, mountains, skiing, diversity...my concern is the dark in the winter and the distance from the lower 48...any suggestions? What's good, what's bad? Thanks!

J: We moved here from Seattle 23 years ago and have loved it. Winters lately have been disappointing with much warmer temp, sleet/frozen rain, and ice covered streets. Summers are cool, 60s, and rainy. Visit here in May which is very dry and sunny historically or Mid-September to October. Winters can be dreary; however, retirees are now choosing to stay here so the median age will be increasing, healthcare and senior housing are booming. No commute issues compared to the Lower 48, travel is a 3-1/2 hr non-stop flight to Seattle, 5-1/2 non-stop to Hawaii, or 6 hr non-stop to Chicago. Hiking is awesome, great place to raise a family, and we are VERY diverse up here (linguistically, racially, religion, and sexual orientation). Compared to the Lower 48, Alaskans are more friendly and certainly go out of their way to help others in need (Pioneer Spirit?).
