Review of Bakersfield, California

No place for moderate, open minded people.
Star Rating - 11/13/2009
It's a redneck town is what I was told when I bought a home here in 2002. I didn't think it could be all that bad. I was wrong; it is much, much worse than I expected. It is a hotbed of right wing conservatives and religious fanatics. The level of intelligence and fair mindedness was made clear to me when I commented to someone that Boston, Mass. was having a snowstorm. The comment in reply was that that must be making the democrats mad. Another comment was that all you liberals care about is abortion. Such is the mental acuity with which one must contend.
Ask anyone why they voted for McCain/Palin and the stock answer will be that they voted that way because of that worn out ludcrous term of family values. Those who were saying love it or leave when the Bush monarchy existed are now trying to revolt and dismiss the man who is without question the most intelligent, thoughtful man that has occupied the office since JFK.
As for the weather, it is horrible except for a few days in the Fall and Spring. Summers are all but unbearable from June through September.
The majority of white people I have met, most of whom have lived only here for their entire lives, are extremely narrow minded, mostly exclusive, largely racist, bigoted and condescending to all but immediate family and longtime friends. Evangelicals Christians dominate the scene along with Baptist and Jehovah's Witness, contrary to statistics. The culture, and I use the word loosely, is all about getting ourselves a home with a big screen TV and one or two big trucks although we don't have anything to put in the trucks.
As a white person, the friendliest people I have met are actually Hispanics who have integrated into the community to some extent. African American population seems low.
Any true ambiance is lacking as there is no culture of which to speak. The three movie theater complexes all show the same run of the mill mainstream mind candy which few exceptions.
As for the schools, I don't have children in them but have met several teachers that I woulld not want teaching them if I did for lack of competence and relgious convictions (one said that eveloution is a nice fairy tale).
And I should mention that the house I bought which was once worth $325,000 is now worth somewhere between $124,000 and $150,000.
On the positive side, golf is cheap and easily accessible. Courses are seldom crowded because of the weather. Sunday mornings are great because they are all in church.

Typical liberal hypocrite: expound about people being close minded and then label everyone from a conservative town as "neo nazi white trash". I'm sure that you're a pillar of any community lucky enough to have you.

You are a typical liberal hypocrite. You think its OK to berate the occupier of the White House for 8 years--George W. Bush--and then get mad when Conservatives criticize your 'messiah'? What a laugh! If Obama is so intelligent, then why cant he do anything right? You are setting yourself up for great disappointment with Obamaie. Whats also funny is you guys calling yourselves 'open minded' when you berate a person who has different beliefs than you. You liberals R a joke. Sounds like you would be comfortable in the People's Republic of San Francisco.

Man you have said it all Bill I lived in that god for saken town of bakersfield for ten years off and on and I finally got out over four months ago. I ended up moving to the Portland Oregon metro area and let me tell you it is night and day when comparing Portland to damn Bakersfield. How anyone is able to live in Bakersfield is beyond me between the lack of entertainment and the smog it should be enough to deter anyone from moving into that neo nazi white trash town and don't get me started with how conservative that those people are I mean all that the locals do is talk crap to any expat that they can find living in that city (and god help you if you are a liberal minded person like myself) what else can I say but narrow minded and the lack of things to do makes you want to sit around and eat all day long just for the fact that there is nothing to do in that town The white people in that city give white people everywhere a bad name!!! and what is up with all the corporations that move into that city four walmarts, four home depots, two lowes, and nothing but fast fodd restaurants everywhere typical right wing community always pro big business. Let's not forget that the entire populace is pro war and is still worshipping bush and cheney and are nothing more then bible thumpers. Bill my advice to you is move come up to Oregon you are more then welcome to! yes it has some drawbacks it rains alot and it gets cold in the winter but the people are nice and will want to know you once you decide to blend in with their way of life life up here is nice and slow and virtually has no crime from what I can see to bad I can't say the same thing about bakersfield lol!!!!!
