Review of Betha,

Neighborhoods Matter!
Star Rating - 11/10/2011
After reading a few other reviews about Portland, I figured I would throw my own opinion out here. As a native to Portland, I hope I can claim some expertise when it comes to understanding culture here.

In General:
If you are thinking about moving here but do not think it would be a good cultural fit, I would reconsider. Different areas of Portland and its surrounding suburbs offer much more diverse cultural and social opportunities than people normally think of. Generally, suburbs or areas of Portland that are close to the city center tend to have a very predominant culture whereas further out suburbs are less defined.

Some Examples! (Just a small sample: please look further into all areas!)
Close in East Side - known for the hipster/hippie culture. The "So Portland" area, if you will. Tends to be young, well educated individuals who express interest in creative arts or occupations. Safe, but not necessarily described as affluent. Known for neighborhood parties, markets, and other activities that are put on by the community itself. Very "Bohemian."

North Portland - Recently hit relatively hard by the economic downturn, the area tends to be poorer than the rest of the city and reports higher levels of crime.

Lake Oswego - affluent, older, well-educated families. Known for being more conservative than the rest of the area. Known for being "old money."

Beaverton - closely resembles a "classic suburban town." Contains some areas with higher levels of crime and some areas that are affluent. More racially diverse than the Portland city limits.

In Summary:
Yes, Portland DOES have a hyper-liberal "predominant" culture, but it does not permeate into every area of the city. Like any big city, which part of the town you're in matters and will greatly influence your experiences, social spheres, etc. So don't count Portland out simply on the basis of culture; odds are that if you're into something, you can find a group here that's into it too :)

Best of luck making your moving decisions regardless of whether you choose Portland as home or not!
