Depends on what you like

I have lived in a small town about 45 minutes away from Bismarck and then moved to University of Mary 5 years ago and have lived in Bismarck ever since. I am still at the university to finish up my doctorate. From my time growing up in a small town and going to Bismarck for shopping, eating out, etc. I thought there was a lot to do. I mean in a small town there’s barely much to do. The traffic isn’t terrible at all on the Interstate. When living in Bismarck, I realized that there is not much to do. No wonder why many high school students turn to drinking. There are things that every city has such as bowling, movie theaters, restaurants, sky zone, ice skating, and sporting events you can sign up for. There are also parks, trails, and the river that only people with boats go on. Bismarck has gotten to be less safe over the years. 5 years ago I could leave my car unlocked but ever since the oil boom, there have been more people moving into ND. I now have to lock my car at all times because you never know what might happen anymore. Bismarck however is much safer than the larger cities in the U.S. If you are a mountain person and love hiking, do not move here. This place does not have clubs or huge casinos. However, the closest big city is Minneapolis, which isn’t too far of a drive and many people in ND tend to go there for hockey games, football games, baseball games. If you’re looking for a place that is low key and want to get away from a large city, this place is for you. ND can be very relaxing if you drive outside of Bismarck. Finding gravel roads in the middle of nowhere, lakes, and fishing are a plus. Small towns also offer many hidden secrets such as Napoleon, ND restaurants and Wishek, ND sausage. If you want to live in a small town, that is close to a bigger city, I’d suggest moving to Steele, Napoleon, Wishek, Linton, New Salem, etc. the community is great and you will know everyone. However, drama and gossip will occur. I hope this helps if you are thinking of moving to Bismarck, ND or even a small town.
