Review of Brockport, New York

Brockport NY I wish there were more places like yo
Star Rating - 6/6/2011
I left Brockport in 1981 to join the Air Force and never wanted to go back. This may be just nostalgia talking and along with the good there was some bad, but I miss it. After being out in the world to such places as Boston, Seattle and Phoenix I can say with confidence, Brockport has simple pleasures you can't find in big cities with one of the best school systems I've ever seen. There's so much potential in Brockport with it's proximity to large cities yet away from it all. A large State University offering degrees in Nursing, math, science and the Liberal Arts. It's a place that sometimes seems lost in time, with it's annual carnivals and old Victorian style homes lining the main road right through the center of town and the Erie canal, in all it's glory, cutting a perpendicular course against it.
Winters are cold and snowy, summers are warm and green. (not too hot for too long) Lake Ontario is only 15 miles to the north for picnics, camping, swimming and boating. Ice skating and sledding is everywhere in winter. The down side is the way the town can change to accommodate the varied population especially when the NYC kids come up for college and bring their behavioral problems with them. (It only takes a few to spoil it for everyone), So you'll have bars and churches on opposing corners. Aside from that though the local population though different in many ways seems to really look out for one another building a sense of community spirit. My old friends seem to run the town now and I enjoy coming back to see the old haunts. I just wish there were better job opportunities and lower taxes. If you have a good job in that area then you'll be sitting on top of the world.
