Columbus is a wonderful city for a family. It is a growing city, always expanding into the cornfields, which many people are fighting. The city is almost quaint in its overall theme. People raise families, work and generally just live here. If you are into a simple, sedentary life, this is the place for you. If you don't know what a Mid-west ideal is, visit Columbus. Columbus is also a big "test" city. So companies are constanly introducing new products here, unbeknowst to most of the residents. Pizza, McDonalds and restaurants are some of the biggest test itmes you see. People like to eat here. I believe we have the most fast food restaurants per capita. Its disgusting. Columbus is a relatively cheap place to live. I'm from Jersey and I almost wet my pants when I learned my car insurance was going down 40%!!
On the other hand the climate is OK. Winters are not that bad. Is doesn't snow that much, not as bad as Cleveland. Snow removal is horrible though. If you live on a residential street in a not-so-good part of town, it is possible your snow will not be removed until it melts. Also the school funding out here is pathetic. No one wants to have their taxes raised to pay school levys, PLUS the school board wastes money left and right. Also the road system is pretty bad. Just not well thought out.
Columbus is a fairly lage city, but like I told someone the other day, you travel 30 minutes in any direction from mid-Columbus and you're in a cornfield (or soybean). If you are looking for action - this is not the place. It can become boring quickly. Downtown closes down at 5:00.
From one East Coaster to another -- don't do it.
