Review of Dayton, Nevada

Wide Open for Business Development
Star Rating - 3/28/2024
We moved from Klamath Falls, OR, where we lived for 14 yrs. and was one of the friendliest towns I've experienced, to Dayton in 2019. Priced out of the housing markets in Carson City, we opted for retiring in Dayton. This bedroom community of Carson City has been growing very fast to 16,000 and there are new subdivisions with homes on smaller lots and condos being built right now. Traffic is heavy with commuters to Carson and we need another large grocery store as well as more business development. Once hailed as the place where gold and silver were first discovered in NV, the "downtown" area is woefully underdeveloped and there are a few restaurants but not enough. Shopping choices are very limited but we now have an Ace hardware store that has been a great addition. We have excellent medical/dental care here with an Urgent Care also but hospitals are located in Carson City. The gated golf course community is insulated from the Hwy 50 flow where a small state park and several smaller casinos are located. Employment opportunities are limited and housing costs are substantial but the property taxes are much lower than in Oregon. We have abundant wildlife (including wild horses) here and wild spaces for hiking and photography as well as motorized sports. Fernley is too far to be considered Dayton's metro area; it is definitely Carson City for abundant shopping, eateries and entertainment. We certainly could use more City parks and public gathering spaces here. We do have a dog park however but need more groomers. Crime is lower here but there aren't a lot of indoor recreational choices like a swim center or bowling lanes. It is wide open for business infrastructure development. People are generally friendly and helpful. We have a definite lack of rental housing as homebuilders are targeting home buyers, not tenants. For folks that like a semi-rural community, Dayton is a pleasant choice.
