Compromised Affordable Place to Live

Deming, NM, 30 miles from the Mexican border in Southwest New Mexico, is a very affordable place to live. Housing is still very much below the national average; property taxes are pretty low. As affordable as it is, we attract people who have very low income, and we are struggling to catch up to the 21st Century in many ways because of the lack of funding: no movie theatre or recreational activities, triage-like medical care; improving, but still well below national average education. Currently, there are 50 high school pregnancies.
For those who are above poverty level (the minority), it is frustrating. There are many, many run down homes/mobile homes that you can't avoid on your way to any where, including nice homes. Crime is high, both violent and property, and the ILLEGAL ALIEN AND DRUG SMUGGLING UNDERGROUND IS ALIVE AND WELL IN DEMING.
The winter weather is not extreme. Trace snow; cold nights (teens), but reasonable days (40s). Spring is extremely WINDY. Summer is dry but hot (high 90s/low 100s). Fall is very pleasant. Because of the great number of ranches and farms, the dust and dirt is unavoidable especially during the windy season, with many dust storms that can shut down the interstate at times.
Shopping is available with very few specialty shops and Super-WalMart the biggest retailer in town. The nearest mall if that is any indication is a one hour drive (60+ miles away) in Las Cruces, NM.
We coexist with the black widow spider, the brown recluse, terantulas, scorpions, coyotes, rattle snakes and FLIES, but with the exception of the latter, it doesn't force you into your home.
Deming, NM is certainly an affordable place to live when compared to the majority of places across the country, but even affordability comes at a price.
