Plusses and minuses concerning Flagstaff's climate
Star Rating - 6/13/2008
I moved to Flagstaff in August 2005 in order to take a graduate forestry degree. The past 3 years have had increasingly colder, snowier, longer winters. If you do not mind a cold, generally windy to very windy climate during certain months, you will like living here. We had snowfall several times this May, albeit just an inch or two. For those of us who want to be able to hike and camp as often as possible, and wear shorts as often as possible, we feel trapped indoors from Nov 1- April 1, even longer, as far getting to do those things. What can make the cold weather tolerable is the great number of sunny days throughout 12 months. Still, I plan to relocate to a much warmer climate. I lived in overcast Buffalo, NY, for 21 years. Except for the abundance of Flagstaff's sunny days, the general coldness of Flagstaff's winters, and the number of months it stays cold in Flagstaff, the November-May weather here rivals Buffalo's, although we have not been getting as much snow. Flagstaff's elevation is 7,000; the deciduous trees in the Northeast and Midwest bud around 3 weeks before ours do. Feel free to contact me for more information.

I’ve lived in upstate New York and worked in Chicago, and think Flagstaff winters are a breeze. Yes, it does snow here...but unlike eastern winters the snow falls, the clouds clear and the sun returns. It can be 35 degrees here but if the sun’s out I barely need a jacket. Low humidity is a big plus. We’re in mid-November and it was 70 degrees today. I remember Midwest winters where you wouldn’t see the sun for months. I guess everyone’s perspective is different, but I think Flagstaff’s climate is awesome.

I am considering relocation to Flagstaff, even after reading a lot of reasons to question this move. However, I will have to first find work, from a distance (at least secure a couple of interviews) before advancing further in this speculation. Can you suggest how to approach, via internet and telephone, job seeking? My primary experience is in administration of private non-profit service agencies and teaching special education in public school. thanks for any ideas!
