Review of Hagerstown, Indiana

it's ok but you have to have several generations
Star Rating - 11/8/2009
I've lived in Hagerstown for 4 years. It's fairly nice, in that there isn't a lot of crime, but with the exception of about 5 people, all of the rest of the people here are extremely rude. You pretty much have to have had several generations of relatives living here in order to "be one of the accepted." It's very frustrating. The folks at IGA are super wonderful and always helpful. The baggers even offer to take your stuff out to your car for you, which is neat (I always do it myself, so they can help others), but they are some of the only ones who are really nice. Most everyone else will ignore you or be flat-out rude. They are not quick to fix certain problems (such as a HUGE pothole in the alley, or sewer lines getting clogged). They also have Jubilee days every year, which is a small town fair, which goes down Plum Street. It's a bit inconvenient, but that isn't the worst part. The vendors have been encouraged to go up to the houses on the block and hook up their water hoses! I told one guy that if he hooked up to my house (which would naturally run up MY water bill), then I was going to cut the hose up into tiny pieces. He got the hint. Every year, I have to disconnect the water hose, then politely tell vendors to please not bother to hook up to my faucet. This event cost my next door neighbor an extra $300 on their bill last year because vendors hooked up to their faucet when they weren't home for the weekend. The utility company told them it was their problem. If you don't mind not being buddies with ANYONE in town, then yeah, you can live here. If you want to be involved in your community, find a different community. Also, houses are too expensive. All shops close up by 8 or 9. I can't wait to move out of this town, when I can finally sell my house and get outta here.
