I lived in the Indy area for around 23 years, recently moved away to pursue career opportunities, and I miss it a ton. There is plenty to do in Indianapolis if you take the time to just look. There are a ton of festivals throughout the year, as well as concerts, 4 sports to watch, tons of places to shop, a great zoo for kids, museums (including a really cool children's museum, cafes, theaters, and a decent nightlife. If you feel like getting away for a weekend and going someplace, whether that be a hotel or bed and breakfast around Brown County, or whether you would like take off and go to Chicago only 3 hours away. We usually made 2 or 3 trips a year to Kings Island and/or Cedar Point. Also, if you like to hike, bike, boat, or the like every once in a while, Eagle Creek Park is an awsome place to spend some time alone of with your family. Living in Indianapolis has a lot of perks, and there are a lot of things within a short drive as well. As far as jobs and the economy go, I guess it would depend on what degree you have, but I never found it hard to find job opportunities in the area. Much of central Indiana was based on manufacturing jobs -which have declined at an alarming rate- but I still believe there are jobs out there. What people are failing to mention in their posts is that Indianapolis has a very low cost of living in comparison to most large cities. Every city has certain job types that are prominent and not-so-prominent, and Indy is no exception. As far as pollution and crime goes, the comments on here so far are making me laugh. Pollution? You people need to get out of Indy more and go visit some other large cities. Indy is very reasonable in comparison. Crime? It can be a problem, but, again, very, very mild in comparison to most large cities. The school system? Well, you'll be hard pressed to find any good public school systems in large cities across this country. You can gripe about the schools all you want -and they can be very bad-, but I don't think they're any worse than any other large city. That would be why my kids go to private schools. Overall, I loved living in Indy. There are plenty of things to enjoy whether single or whether you have a family. The best part is that you don't constantly have to look over your shoulder and worry about crime like you do in a lot of cities.
