Review of Johnson City, Tennessee

Housing costs low comparatively
Star Rating - 3/17/2007
In all of the Tri-Cities are the housing market is steady. We were not affected by a "housing bubble" we still maintain our 5%-7% equity growth per year. We have low property taxes, homeowners insurance rates are fair and lower than most areas of the county because we do not have strong weather patterns and are protected by the surrounding mountains even though we are in a valley. You can find a very nice average middle class home in the 150k range. We have great schools. The Tri-Cites has most of all the same amenities of a large city, but with almost no traffic issues. You can live in a country setting and be within a 15 minute drive to work and shopping. Our unemployment rate is low, employers care about their employees, the people (in general) are friendly and there is a great seance of community.
No, I am not a Realtor, I live and work here and I LOVE North East TN!!!

When Mary wrote this the housing market was steady. Housing prices have since dropped a tiny bit. Like other parts of the country the most expensive homes depreciated the most but even the condos and small single family homes have stagnated since 2007 or dropped by a few grand. Still, not as bad as many many regions. It's pretty rare to hear about folks being upside down with their mortgages larger than the homes value. I'm not a realtor either and I have to agree that i love east TN. It is a great place to retire with low housing costs, low property taxes, sales tax higher than many places but not outweighing the money you save and you're close enough to the VA border to slip over and make those large purchases and pay 6% sales tax [laugh]. If you are transferred her by your company or are in the health care profession then you will love your buying power. don't come here without a job however. The puzzling thing is this area is so perfect for industry in so many ways yet there is a shortage of it at this time. Industries that need to be near a major highway, rail line or maybe even have an airport big enough for their corporate jet really should look closely at this region.
