Review of Lafayette, Louisiana

Lafayette is UGLY. There are very, very few attractive places in relation to the vast majority of commercial and residential areas that are neglected.

If you have lived in a city that cares about it's impressions to visitors and potential residents, you will notice this immediately. Very few greenbelts or parks, virtually no attractive landscaping, and it has some of the ugliest shopping centers on the planet as you drive down Johnston (the major artery)unless you are passing the college. If you were raised in the area, you probably will not realize this absolute fact unless you have lived in an area where some funds are spent creating a modicum of pride in the city's appearance.

The people are very nice and polite on the surface. Underneath there is a pervasive prejudice against people of color. I have never heard the "n" word used with as much flippant use as I have living in this area, and correct or enlighten at your own risk. Again, is you have lived here all your life, this fact will fly under your radar, as this is fairly normal and acceptable.

There are many fantastic attributes the people here embody. They are hard-working, largely honest and forthright, and they have a very deep sense of pride (as evidenced right here in the comments of the locals who were raised here). The culture promotes and esteems good times and great food. There is a live and let live mentality, especially among the Cajuns, that is refreshing.

Lafayette and the surrounding areas have their good points and bad points. And if you comment on the bad points, even when prompted, you can expect to be told to go back to where you came from.

I cant wait to get out of here. We needed to move here 2 years ago after the economy bust in FL. We moved to Tampa, FL in '05 from the Seattle area and could only enjoy it for 3 years. We are very unhappy. I have taken off several times to the FL panhandle to get my fix. It is so ugly here. The only nice area is River Ranch but it's very small. There a few other okay neighborhoods but not that great. There are a lot of job transplants here like us, several plates in our apt community are Floridian and even WA state plates which blew us away. The economy here is above most areas in the US which is why. I just wish they would put money into it. It's just so run down and Cajuns deserve better. The traffic is horrible too. Seattle is rated number 1 for traffic now so we know what bad traffic is. Husband got hit last year and I have almost been hit 4 times and I hardly go anywhere now because of it. Weather wise Tampa is humid but its tolerable. Here it isn't for me, much worse. I am trying to deal by telling myself I at least am in the South. My heart belongs to the South as my family on both sides are from TX, AR, and FL, and I will never move back north or west. I also will say this. I love the Cajun people and culture. They are very proud and I love that. I do feel a certain connection since I have French blood in me too, last name being Govreau. I enjoy going out to listen to zydeco and watch them dance. My husband won't dance with me :( Take care, ReneMarie
