Review of Louisville, Kentucky

Bored in Louisville
Star Rating - 7/20/2008
I have lived and worked in Louisville for the past 15 years after spending several years in Nashville, New York, and Maryland which are all better places than Louisville. During this time, my kids have been victims of the poor school system here and I have not had any type of job growth or wage increase in five years even with a PhD. Sexism is alive an well as the good ole boy network rules this region. Once you reach a certain point here in a job, even with a PhD, there is a plateau and I continue to ask myself why my husband and I continue to stay. Well, we tried to sell our house; however, the prices in our east end neighborhood continue to decrease over what we paid for it several years ago and there have been no buyers. My husband's company has constructed several condos and lofts downtown; however, many are still empty. There is little to no progression here. It is boring and the only thing to look forward to is Thunder, Derby, and the day we move away from here. My kids all went away to college out of state and are way behind other students in college maybe because the school system here is going down the tubes and my kids have no intentions on ever coming back. Many of the kids whom graduated with them in high school have become stuck in this black hole. If you can leave this place, do it. As for the culture, or the lack of culture, it is Kentucky, so you can't really expect much.

I feel stuck here, but plan on moving out in a few years when I can. I have never experienced as much clannish immaturity as I have in this town. I used to think I could grow where I was planted, and people were people anywhere. Not so.

You've hit it right on the head of what Louisville has become. The schools here are awful. In fact, a friend of mine with daughter aged 11 took her kid out of the public school system where she was making an A and put into a Catholic school where she ended up getting Cs and Ds. So much for that public school system. Its no wonder the kids here are thugs and dumb. I mean, how do you have a world class economy based on burger flipping jobs and box flipping jobs at Worldport. Its a shame Beth and hopefully you will be able to move to better places sometime soon. Sexism is the rule around here and racism is the other. I'm not even black but I see it every day. If you're not belonging to the higher ups of the East End clique you can expect to be kept down. Its 30 years of the same politicians and good ole boys. This city has went from being moderate to quite poor over the years. You can see it when half the city has been turned into a vast urban ghetto especially west of I 65. It must be nice to have a horse track right in the middle of an urban slum but thats Louisville for you. Wages here are stagnant for all educational levels and all job classifications. Check out the job ads in other mid sized metros and you will see what I mean. Even my truck driving uncle makes ten dollars an hour more in Indianapolis than what the locals here make. Its atrocious and the cost of living is not much less than any other Midwestern city. Employers here like to use the temp services to keep wages down as well. Its an embarassment of a city. Instead of paying 15 or 20 dollars an hour like most US cities, these people pride themselves in giving out 8 to 10 dollar an hour jobs. Which don't pay the bills or much else. ITS TIME FOR A lot more of US to leave Louisville. If you are not from here, do yourself a favor and do not come here. Trust me, its very factual what is said here especially economics and culture. It will be a culture shock for you and your family.
