Review of Louisville, Kentucky

What a sad excuse for a city...
Star Rating - 8/11/2009
Lowly education...
Over-competitive people who MUST be first, always...
Self-absorbed and extremely unaware of right and wrong...
Unable to comprehend the 3 commons: sense, courtesy, and decency...

Louisville is a place that starts out with a smiling face and the shake of your hand; on the surface it looks to be the dream locale to bring up your children. Live here awhile and you begin to feel the under-currents of something amiss; something just a tad 'off'. After having been here for 11 years - I cannot wait for the day I put this ass-backwards thinking, low-level of intelligence, narcissistic, and extremely callus and abrasive place in my rear-view mirror.

The saddest part of it all - the people here that are so passive-aggressive, so 'smile to your face but I'll stab you in the back', and so 'I'm more important than you so get out of my way' - really do seem really, really nice at first; the type of people you'd like to be around. Many who move here - move away... "I'm sorry - I'm just not from here, so I don't think like that and I wasn't brought up that way. I'm more like the rest of the country, and now - I'm outta here."

Oh my! I truly agree. Moving to L'ville was one of the worst things that ever happened to me. Never have I lived in a city where so many people try to take advantage of you. The city is quite charming in appearance, but I found people so ingenuine and cold, very pompous and judgmental without the intelligence, skill, or talent needed to back up their profound arrogance. The decadence of the KY Derby pretty much sums up the culture of L'ville and Lexington--it's all about keeping up appearances and displaying power and money. Such a classist area! There is a significant difference between the haves and the have-nots. Even people who consider themselves to be liberal/radical/progressive are actually quite conservative from the perspective of someone who lived in area with an actual, flourishing, progressive movement. Several African-American people said to me (being White), "You aren't from here, are you?" When I asked how they knew, one said, "Because you don't do what they do." I heard a number of people make blatantly racist comments in public, especially around people of color. And what's with the "Keep Louisville Weird" buy-local campaign which they plagiarized from Austin? Does the city not have any unique qualities to promote its cultural identity? Well, actually, L'ville seems to only stand apart from to the rest of Kentucky which is predominantly rural (apart from Frankfort and Lexington, that is). I had an opportunity to work throughout the Commonwealth and heard numerous people born and raised there say they wish that L'ville would secede from Kentucky and join southern Indiana! If you want real Southern hospitality and charm or the simplicity, honesty, and humbleness of the Midwest, you're not going to find of that here--only the worst of both cultures.

I'm sad to say I have experienced this exact same thing. It's like noone matures past high school.

I lived in Louisville my whole life and I love it. I have visit other cities and could honestly say that I rather be in Louisville than any other city. If you don’t like Louisville then maybe you just don’t fit in with the rest of us that loves this city.

Louisville, what a joke of a city both from a personal and professional perspective. I find it hilarious that people from Louisville always have to defend their city in such a way that basically shows their ignorance of the rest of the nation and what goes on outside of Louisville. The job market in the Louisville Metro area is severely lacking and it was that way prior to the 2008 economic crash. When I see college graduates working at bartending jobs or for temporary agencies in the allegedly good time, something is seriously wrong. This went on for many years prior to the crash. At the time I lived in Indiana and didn't know a lot about the city so I didn't arrive with preconceived notions. The economy in the city is horrid at best and it is based on who you know. Corruption is a main problem of the Louisville Metro government. It is quite similar to what you would find in either Southern good old boy towns or even in some Northern cities. They're just as crooked and institutionalized as say Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, etc. They've covered up things so well but the corruption and good old boy system is rampant. Unlike Chicago, they don't put people in body bags. That is the main difference. Its just done a bit differently through kickbacks, contracts, etc. As far as people go, overall they are very marginal both economically and intelligence wise. I've worked with and been around a wide variety of people in my life and I've never found more closed minded people that Louisville. Even small country towns in Indiana and Kentucky don't appear as closed minded and those are two states that act very much conservative or backwards. Passive aggressive and liars is a big component of my problem with these people. Its not just white lies or just someone talking about their past. Its relevant in the employment realm that you're going to have to deal with the passive aggressive complex and the level of dishonesty. Its a lot of talk about bible belt values but little of that is actually practiced and hypocrisy is the norm. Southern hospitality as one might call it would be better found down in Tennessee or other Deep South states. People with at least an attempt at better values. Educationally Louisville is a seriously bad city in education and improvement. Which is why employers are avoiding the city in droves even prior to 2008. I would suspect that people with money would be arrogant but in Louisville its people that don't have a lot of money are would be considered middle class. Rude would be a good description and it appears that most of them haven't been raised any better. Louisville people and natives of the city don't like to hear this about their problems and their arrogance and attitude problem. I lived there 3 years and traveled to the city for about 10 to 15 years prior to that and it seemed that over the years it actually got worse. Just a lack of decency and respect among the people there. Something makes these people candidates for the local mental institution called Central State. Its a psychological problem and lack of basic decorum that those people have. I've seen it with my own two eyes. Employers lie and make up stuff and so do many of the co workers. They have serious issues and having lived elsewhere I've seen people that know better than these people. Try living most places that aren't huge cities and you'll see basic decency from most people. But not in Louisville, and what a waste of time in that wretched city.

I agree with Kat, arrogance meets ignorance in town called Louisville.

Wow, obviously you just didn't fit in here in Louisville. I have lived other places and am not originally from this city but have loved the time we have been here. I would think that if you hated it so much that you wouldn't have stayed here for 11 years to further torture yourself and the horrible people you speak of. I have found the city to be progressive in many areas that others are not and it has something to offer everyone, from art, culture, history, family (traditional and non-traditional), and a lot more. Maybe it was just you that had nothing to offer Louisville. Hope you see or saw the people waving goodbye to you in your rearview mirror....we're happy you are gone!

i do agree, louisville is not a great place to live, the people here are closed minded and ignorant. They dont seem welcome people from other places too well, its like they stick with the people they've grown up around and anyone else is an outsider. ive actually made the mistake of moving there twice. i thought years later maybe things there had gotten better, but it's worse. it seems to be good for a short time, then you start to see it for what it really is, the school system is a joke, even the legal system here is quite backwards, after living in other places and then going to back to louisville it makes you truly appreciate being somewhere else. it seems like everyone you meet is going to try and get over on you are use you in some way, no matter what walk of life they come from. it has nothing to do with not fitting in here, ive met so many people here from other places that all feel the same way, and its also easy to move here and somehow get stuck. this is not a good place to live and if you can move somewhere else.
