I would suggest that anyone considering living in Monticello, KY check out the mortality statistics. According to local physicians (who will talk privately), the cancer rate is astronomically high. Several causes have been postulated, chief among them the indiscriminate use of pesticides and some possible "off site transfers," meaning toxic waste hauled in from other states. In addition, the water from Lake Cumberland, which is the source of drinking water for the town, is loaded with mercury from the state's coal-fired power plants, the closest of which is in Somerset, Kentucky. Check out Somerset's profile on Scorecard.org. Quite a shocker for a small town. Beautiful area. Nice people. But something is very wrong there.
