As a native New Yorker I can tell you that this city is the greatest city in the world. It really is. People move from all over the world to come live here and it is totally worth it. Here is the thing. New Yorkers have a reputation for being rude or abbrasive. The thing many people overlook is that most people hang out in Manhattan. Most of the people that live in Manhattan are what us natives refer to as transplants, meaning they came from somewhere else. These people never truely understand NY culture or attitude.

I find that whenever there is someone that seems to be disliked by just about everyone, they are not from here. I am not making excuses for these people but NY culture is difficult to acclimate to and many people are nice enough when they get here but this city changes them.

For this reason, I encourage people to wander outside of Manhattan where there are no real neighborhoods left anyway since the population is so transient. Go to Broooklyn or Queens and get yourself a nice meal and check out some of the local culture. I happen to live in Astoria and have been there for a decade and I can tell you honestly that I can't bring myself to leave it.

I have had many many opportunities to move into Manhattan and have always passed them up. Why would I? My rent is 1/3 of what it would be in Manhattan and the cost of living is SOOOO much lower. Food is amazing and it is 12 minutes from Lexington and 59th Street. Plus, and this is a big plus, I get to surround myself with so many native New Yorkers. And those that aren't are there to be around real New Yorkers. It's a slam dunk. Did I mention that with all the money I save I take 5 good vacations a year?
