Yes, I had a job interview there just one year ago. I spent about a week in the area and I was impressed to the max. I, too, had lived in the DC area in years gone by. SE Virginia, or Hampton Roads as it's referred to by some, offers a great deal. It's not for everyone. If you like your winters, this is not the place. If you are worried about being near the Ocean, stay away! However if natural beauty is of interest to you, you will discover how stunning the region is. It is the northernmost natural habitat for the Live Oak: Yes, you do not have to travel all the way down to the Gulf to see those majestic trees. The city of Norfolk has undergone a massive overhaul, and now the shopping, entertainment, and dining are sublime. It is also nice to be within a short drive from such pivotal historical sites as Jamestown and Williamsburg. Also, for the beach-lovers (and I would feel very sorry for a beach-hating person forced to move to the region), Virginia Beach has beautiful, even clean stretches. If you want to take a little drive, the NC Outer Banks beckon. All in all, while happy here in STL, I still muse at times about "checking in" with my would-be employer in Norfolk.
