Review of Plainfield, Illinois

We love it here.
Star Rating - 9/17/2006
We moved to Plainfeld in 2002 and have never regretted it. There is lots to do, tons of shopping & restaurants, many parks, etc. The traffic is not bad - both local and on expressways (I used to commute to downtown Chicago for work and it wasn't bad). The park district offers lots of acivities/sports for kids and there are new schools being build every day for the expanding population. Most people are friendly, as the area is mostly relatively new and most people are also transplants. We really love it here. I cannot say enough good things about Plainfield. I have traveled all over and this is by far my favorite place to be. We are five minutes from both shopping and cornfields, so we really have the best of both worlds. With nice, new schools and very low crime, It is a fantastic place to raise a family. And there is a little something for pretty much everyone. (In a nearby town - about 5 minutes away - there are even a couple of upscale active adult communities for those 55+, with individual and town houses and huge clubhouses and loads of activities - just a thought for those looking to bring their parents or who are active adults themselves)

The downsides are that you will live in a cookie-cutter type house and subdivision unless you want to live in the older part of town or plan to spend over $600,000 on a house. But on the upside, almost all of the subdivisions do have parks & small man-made lakes/ponds and some even have upscale clubhouses. And all the cookie-cutter houses are nice-looking and big. There is not a huge nightlife/single scene, as most people seem to have families, but there are a number of casinos in nearby Joliet or you can travel downtown Chicago for big, happening bars, etc. Another downside is the constant road construction. Since the community is expandly rapidly, the roads are being redone to accomodate the new traffic. They are pretty quick about geting it done, however, and for the most part it does not really back traffic up (most of the road construction is to widen existing roads or building new ones - neither of which really interfere with existing traffic/roads). Other than these issues, I can find absolutely nothing wrong with Plainfield. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Especially those with families looking for the "American Dream"-type setting.
